Make Meta Tags Matter for Better Website Traffic!
Meta tags are used to help define characteristics about a web document. There is some debate in the online community about whether major search engines still use meta data to determine what a website is about. To me, it’s obvious that they do. By using extensive meta tags, I’ve developed dozens of successful websites.
Remember that meta tags are about the document they’re in, not the website they’re on. That’s key. If a search engine reads your meta tags and your description is describing Fredericton restaurants, but the page it’s on doesn’t have anything to do with restaurants in Fredericton, they’ll know that you’re trying to trick them and punish your website!
Instead, make sure that your meta tags are about the page they’re on. That means that your description and keyword tags should be unique for each page on your website with as little overlap as possible.
Your meta description is just that, a description of the document. If you’re writing a post about Fredericton tourism, ensure your description is between 100 and 160 characters in length and summarizes the content of your document in a clean, tidy format. For example, if I were writing a page about Fredericton tourism, I could use the following text as my meta description:
Fredericton New Brunswick, Canada has tourist destinations including hotels, scenic drives, a lighthouse and restaurants. Find things to do in Fredericton.
At 153 characters, this description details the document with clear natural language which makes use of keywords and phrases a visitor is likely to both search for and want to receive.
