I was searching my hard drive today for something work related and came across a handful of shots I though you’d enjoy. Over the past few months I’ve uploaded a bunch of images from New Brunswick, mostly winter and autumn pictures (Eight More Free Fall Photos from New Brunswick CanadaTen Free Photos from Mactaquac CanadaEight Winter Photos from O’Dell Park in Fredericton, Canada) but here’s the last of my fall images from Mactaquac just outside Fredericton, Canada.

You’re free to download and use the images, if you’re going to use them for profit please give me credit.

These are two of my absolute favorite people in the world to photograph with, neither are professionals but both make the experience such a blast. These photos came out of an afternoon shoot, nothing was planned in depth but it turned out to be a great day.

I no longer pursue photography as a career (or even part of my career) but I do still offer some clients product photography as a service and I maintain lighting, lens etc for doing a lot of hobby work. My portfolio is online at http://modelmayhem.com

While I’m not actively pursing photography as a career anymore, I still love taking photographs of interesting people when they’re passing through town.

This was one such case where a Suicide Girl happened to be in town and we spent a bit of time shooting.

My rather meager online photography portfolio can be seen at modelmayhem.com

25 Twitter sized marketing tips every business should know.

twitter logo 25 Twitter sized marketing tips every business should know. imageI’ve often told people in conferences around the country that marketing on the web is really easy, in fact I believe that most marketing advice can be summed up in just a few simple sentences so let’s take a look at 25 pieces of web based marketing advice that every business should follow, as would appear on Twitter.

  1. Keep your website as simple and clean as possible. Remember your goal is to communicate with clients and funnel them into your business.
  2. Analytics only matter if you care about them. How many people come to your website is irrelevant, what matters is how many reach your goal
  3. Understand the basics of HTML. You can’t race a sports car if you don’t understand the basics of how an engine works, know your vehicle.
  4. Web traffic is people not statistics, stop trying to collect them like trading cards and respect the people who take time to come visit you
  5. Provide value to people and help them share your value with their friends, try make every word you type add to the community, not hurt it
  6. Learn how to use PRWeb, FriendFeed, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, RSS and Google properly if you want to reach the masses.
  7. Give your time to local charities and share your story on the web, encourage others in your area to be benevolent and watch traffic climb
  8. It’s OK to be wrong. In fact being wrong is completely amazing, I’ve learnt more from being wrong than I ever managed to learn in school
  9. Take the time to be interesting in your marketing and on your website, people will not follow or subscribe to you if you’re dull.
  10. The most successful websites in the world are free but they make millions. Learn to master advertising venues and you’ll be rich forever.
  11. Stop trying to build websites for Google, start trying to build websites for people who want to open their wallets to you, it’s common sense
  12. Websites need to be kept fresh and updated, don’t just add a blog to your website instead blog as a way of communicating with your customers
  13. My father always told me to measure twice, cut once. Avoid the most obvious mistakes but taking some time and thinking before you jump.
  14. Help people keep in touch with you by adding a link to your Twitter, Facebook page, RSS and email subscriptions on every page of your site
  15. If you can learn what motivates people and learn how to take away the pain they feel you’ll no longer need to market to them to sell to them
  16. Find out who the power players in your industry are and spend time watching everything they do online. when you get it, do it too.
  17. Don’t try to win a web popularity contest, unless you have Megan Fox’s body, the charm of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates money,  you’ll lose.
  18. Don’t just subscribe to marketing blogs that you believe in, there is more than right answer on the web, learn to follow many paths
  19. Develop a realistic series of goals and work very hard to reach them. If you don’t see the results you hoped for, reevaluate and try harder
  20. Share in your marketing success by helping others build their businesses. Linking to great content is the best way to build your own.
  21. Educate your consumer and use the power of social media make your client base smarter, so that they understand the value of your business
  22. A website is a work in progress, you don’t have to wait until its perfect to launch a new website you just have to know that it will grow
  23. Share as much with the world as you possibly can and ask for nothing in return, what starts as a  visit often turns into a lifelong client.
  24. Be honest in everything you do online. The web has a long memory so remember the best way to not get caught being underhanded is to not be
  25. Don’t hire people who tell you they’re good on the web, hire people who are proven on the web … otherwise you’re investing in failures.

Now I have to admit that the inspiration for today’s post came from an absolutely wonderful post called 65 Bite-Sized Web Marketing Tips by Adam Singer and he deserves a lot of credit for my basic philosophy around here. Adam’s linked to a lot of brilliant articles and some that I couldn’t have gotten started with include:

How hard is it to create a blog?

A blog (short for web-log) is a generic term used for a variety of website styles but most commonly it’s a place for a person or company to post articles. The benefits of a quality blog over other web publishing software is that common packages such as WordPress automatically publish content and help optimize it for the web, making the job of creating content much easier for writers.

How Diverse are Blogs?

A traditional blog looks and feels like a running dialog with one post preceding the other and little formatting to break them up but there are also some wonderfully complex installations of blogs these days ranging from major newspapers such as the Christian Science Monitor to CollegeCrunch using the popular package WordPress. The platform is also used to power sites such as Rosie O’Donnell’s blog and the popular technology site of TechCrunch. The potential for powering websites is still somewhat limited but almost all commonly used forms of websites can be powered with blogging software.

How to Install a Basic Blog

bluehost wordpress install 300x209 How hard is it to create a blog? imageAlthough there are many blogging platforms, I have a personal preference and bias towards the WordPress platform. It’s a free, downloadable open source software package with an unbeatable plugin architecture and expandability. Most large web hosting companies already have WordPress installed and simply requires you to go through the installation process to place it on your website.

If you need to install WordPress without the help of your hosting company, you can download the package directly from http://wordpress.org for free as an archive file to your desktop.

After you have downloaded and uncompressed the file, you’ll need an FTP client to upload the content to your web hosting provider. CuteFTP is a small, simple FTP program for Windows which I often recommend for non-technical clients, it has a 30 day trial available as a free download.

Installing WordPress in the Main Directory

Many website owners accidently install their blog in a sub directory such as http://thisismyurl.com/wordpress/ instead of the root directory at http://thisismyurl.com/ this is a pretty easy mistake to make and can be avoided by first deleting the content from your main directory (often called public_html or www in an FTP client) before uploading the contents of the archive file directly into the root directory.

Setting WordPress Permissions

Over the years I’ve seen a lot of new web users become frustrated trying to setup web based software, luckily the nice people at WordPress made it very easy for normal people to setup the software through an easy to use interface however there are still times when users need to manually set the security settings before a web application can access the files. If you have problems on the next step, you may need to right click the wp-content folder of the WordPress directory (on your server) and set it’s permissions to 0677. There’s an easy to follow tutorial located on the Codex for those users.

Setting up the Database

WordPress needs access to a database in order to work. Most web host companies allow you to access a control panel and setup a database fairly easily, check the email sent by your hosting company when you setup your account and follow their directions to log into your control panel.

Once you’re in you’ll want to create a new database and assign a user with full access to the new file. Remember that you’ll need access to the information here later, so write it down!

There are a couple of tricks when setting up a database. The first is to find out where the database is hosted, often it’s at a special website address called localhost. This is literally the same place as your website and it’s the default location but if it’s somewhere else you’ll be told when looking at your database information screen. The second stumbling block for many new website owners is the database name. If you’re on a shared host, there is a very good chance that your database is named with a prefix. For example, if your username is thisismyusername, your database might be called thisismyusername_databasename so be careful and double check!

Installing WordPress

wordpress install 300x216 How hard is it to create a blog? imageOnce you’ve uploaded the WordPress files, open a new web browser and go to your website address (http://www.thisismyurl.com for example) and let WordPress begin the installation process.

It’ll ask you some pretty straight forward questions and when you’re done, it’ll send you an email with your username and password for the new website.

Accessing your new WordPress website is done through a normal web browser, you can surf the front of your website as a normal visitor by going to your domain name, or you can access the administration area through the /wp-admin/ directory. For example http://thisismyurl.com/wp-admin/ is where I store the admin panel for my site.

Adding a New Theme

The default theme that ships with WordPress is great but if you’d like something more unique, there is a whole directory of theme designs at http://wordpress.org/extend/ or you can search Google and find thousands of great templates for free or a small fee. When you find the template that you like, simply upload the whole folder to your /wp-content/themes/ and visit your Appearance tab in WordPress. You can test the theme or activate it from with your administation client.

Common WordPress Installation Problems

The most common problems installing WordPress appear to be related to setting permissions properly and errors connecting to the database, the Codex has a great collection of common errors and how to fix them.

How blogging is like dating

I’m going to have to admit that it’s been 15 years since I was in the dating game but I spend a lot of time traveling and most of that time is spent sitting in bars throughout the country where I spend an unusually large amount of time meeting women. Sometimes I look at single friends of mine and am stunned at how bad they do at meeting girls, since it’s actually just like blogging.

Now the Internet is an amazing place, it’s enabled us to communicate effectively with millions of people everyday and yet most of us don’t take the time to understand who (or why) we’re communicating. So my first rule is …

Know who you’re talking with

This is the best dating advice I can ever offer and for that reason, it’s also the best blogging advice. Know who you’re talking to and understand why they’re listening. When you walk into a pub and look around there are a lot of pretty girls, my advice is instead of talking to any of them spend some time sitting at the bar and talk to the bartender. This allows you to catch a bit of the game, make small talk with a dozen people and find out which people in the pub are people whom you can talk with.

Blogging is the same, I write a lot of content here on my website but what many of you don’t see is that I also talk by email, telephone or even in person with dozens of my readers. In order to be an effective blogger, I need to understand who I’m talking to and what motivates the reader to take the time to come back and read more.

Know why you’re talking with them

A great sales buddy of mine who I used to travel with was always amazed to see me talking to pretty girls at the pub, he thought I must have known some great secret but it was actually the easiest thing in the world, once I knew why I was talking to them. The problem, in my opinion is that most men talk to women for the wrong reason, especially when they’re traveling on business.

In my case, sometimes I spend more time on the road than I do at home and my family is in a completely different time zone most of the time so when I get “home” from work, the hotel is a pretty lonely place but the hotel lobby or bar is great, you can meet people from all over the world and hear the most fascinating stories from the most interesting people. So my motivation for talking to people is to learn from them and in turn, to entertain them.

I think operating a blog is much the same. I don’t always get a chance to respond to every comment here on the site, but I read every one of them and comment as often as work allows. To me, blogging is about both passing wisdom to others and learning from others. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been corrected by posters and as a result, become a better technology evangelist.

By knowing why I’m talking and who I’m talking to, I’m able to be a better communicator.

Know what you’re talking about

Wow, if there was a way to turn back time and tell myself this 20 years ago I’d have been a much better person. When it comes to blogging or dating, knowing what you’re talking about is an extremely good idea. Actually, I can’t stress how good an idea this is in both cases …

When it comes to my blog, I’ve been corrected and called out publicly. I’ve had some posters be very critical, and I’ve had some people help me learn, but in the end what I try to do in each post is present the most honest breakdown of technology as I understand it, in an interesting way. Which brings me to my final point …

Be interesting

The secret to meeting pretty girls in bars is a simple one, be interesting.

The same works for blogging. Now, unfortunately I can’t promise that every post will be interesting but what I can promise is that each post is personal and written to ensure that you’re better off after reading it and that’s the secret to both blogging and dating … ensure that people who you’re talking to are people that you understand and ensure they’re better off after they’re done spending a little bit of time with you.

Easy Technorati Tags for WordPress

TechnoratiThere are a few other Technorati Tags generators for WordPress out there but I found most of them overly complicated and fairly difficult to use, often requiring custom fields or complex processes. What this plugin does is takes the native tags from WordPress and generates a list of Technorati tags for your blog.

Usage

To use the Easy Technorati Tags for WordPress plugin, simply download and install onto your WordPress website. You can then add it to your theme by inserting the code <?php echo timu_technorati_tags() ;?> to your blog theme files or to a sidebar widget.

Output

The tag generates a comma separated list of tags complete with Technorati links. I choose to return it as a value rather than write it directly so that if you’d like to make changes or process the results, you can do it easy.

You can download the plugin directly from the WordPress Plugin Directory. Don’t forget to rate the plugin if you’ve enjoyed it.

How You Can Help

I love developing plugins for WordPress and do my best to always keep them free but of course it take a lot of time and effort to build these plugins so if you’d like to say thanks, the best way is to take a few moments and write about the plugin on your own website, include a link to my website from your posts or download and rate the plugin on the official plugin directory.

21 Reasons why you don’t need Analytics and some other cool finds.

I came across this great piece 21 Reasons Why You Do NOT Need Web Analytics at webanalyticsworld.net after reading Jordan’s You Don’t Need Web Analytics piece over at marketingpilgrim.com, I won’t bore you with the details here but both articles are worth a quick look and certainly true.

Anna Linnea, who inspired my article 10 of the Sexiest Web Headers on the Planet went and changed her header but that’s OK because it’s still pretty cool and she wrote a very cool technical piece on WordPress comments and PHP that I think is well worth the read. Chris Bavota also has a new piece called A New Comment Editor.

Blog Oh Blog has a new contest (WordPress Theme Design Contest – Win $300) and Dosh Dosh has a really cool piece on Twitter Marketing: Why You Don’t Need to Mass Follow Users, which goes back to one of my earlier problems with Twitter and why I don’t get Twitter.

OK, I’m off to YouTube for the rest of the day but let me know if there are any really cool sites you think I should check out.

How do I get more people to find and visit my web site?

First and foremost, write better content more often.

Then, stop asking how to get people to find your website and start asking yourself why would people want to find your website. The trick to the Internet is that it focusses the marketing drive on the consumer, not the company so get out of the ’90s and start trying to make it about the end user instead of your business.

How to make it about the end user

When I was with the US Beer Drinking Team I came up with a marketing concept called Me Marketing, at its core was the simple belief that everybody was (in their own mind at least) special, so if you wanted to market to them all you needed to do was ensure that your business or product solved a problem that they believed they had.

I wrote an article a while back called 25 Things to Do to Increase Your Website Traffic Right Now, which offers some advice for people just starting out as well as a recent post entitled 25 simple ways to make WordPress SEO friendly which  talks about some of the things you can do to make your website more Search Engine Friendly but remember the best way to build readers isn’t to create SEO friendly content, it’s to create content people actually want to read and share with their friends.

How much does a new web site cost?

Websites are one of the funniest things to quote, literally a website range from absolutely nothing (Build a Website) or just $100 (Can you put up a website for less than $100?) to thousands, tens of thousands or even millions or dollars to build so how do I effectively answer a question like How much does a new web site cost?

Let’s look at a couple of different methods for estimating what you should spend on the web.

Do it yourself.

Technically, everything you need to build an effective website is already on your computer or can be downloaded from the Internet for free. As long as you have access to a few basic things, you’re set and the cost of building a website is nothing. Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. A text editor such as Notepad or Textedit
  2. An FTP client to connect to your hosting provider
  3. A hosting account on a web hosting provider
  4. A domain name
  5. Basic HTML skills and/or a copy of WordPress
  6. Knowledge of PHP or similar programming language

Hiring a Professional

If you don’t know how to do it yourself or prefer to hire a professional, the cost to build a website is pretty difficult to estimate because it involves two factors;

  1. How complicated is your website
  2. How expensive is your web professional

When you’re estimating how much time your website will take, I think it’s important to get three quotes from three qualified web professionals. As tempting as it is to work with just one, when it comes to the future of your business it’s a great idea to get a few different opinions but as for the quote itself? Expect it to range dramatically.

Sample Pricing

While I can’t speak for other designers / developers I can tell you that I know many web professionals who price themselves in one of three price ranges:

  • Entry Level – $20 – $35 / hr
  • Mid Career – $40 – $60 / hr
  • Senior Level – $75 – $100 / hr
  • Webmasters – $150 (+) /hr

One of the problems answering the question however is that the amount of time that it takes for somebody to do a job varies, even within the same career levels. For example, my time to SEO a website is fairly low because it’s what I specialize in but my great friend Chris Bavota does it just as fast even though he considers himself less experienced. On the other hand, my custom programming is faster in both prototyping and execution … his rich media on the other hand? Faster and cleaner than I could ever dream. This is why the same project, quoted from three designers / developers can be dramatically different.

A basic website – If your looking for a small website, using WordPress as a content manager, minor customizations to a theme, advice to select some great plugins and installation on a new domain name you should expect to pay for anywhere from three to ten hours of time plus consulting of course.

A large business website – Larger websites are significant investments for a company, while they’re equally difficult to judge one measure that I’ve found fairly accurate in the past is to look at the companies annual print advertising budget and assume the development of a website to compete will cost 75% of the existing budget for the first year and 50% for each additional year.

For example, if your yellow page ad budget is $150 per month ($1,800/yr), you should anticipate your website costing ~$1,350 once completed. This of course represents between 10 and 60 hours of time for a web professional, depending on their experience and level.

A website just like X -  Just to put it out there (because I’m asked the about twice a month), building a website like another popular site is possible, so here are some quick estimates:

  • Facebook – 4,000 hours development & 300 hours per month marketing / maintenance
  • MySpace – ditto.
  • Elance – 2,500 hours development & 200 hours per month maintenance
  • eBay – 2,000 hours development & 200 hours per month maintenance
  • Plenty of Fish – 2,000 hours development & 200 hours per month maintenance

What should you ask your web design firm?

There are a couple of things that I would always recommend you ask your web design firm before getting started with them.

  • Talk to some previous clients to see how responsive and supportive the firm was
  • Ask a few previous clients what the cost / timeline overruns turned out to be
  • Did they find working with the team pleasant?

Web designers are notoriously grumpy sometimes, so you should be able to forgive a little bit of that (it’s a stressful job, like working in a kitchen) but what matters (also like working in a kitchen) is how well the final piece turned out and if it got out on time.

How do you move a website to a new domain?

“… changing your IP address, webhost, domain name, blog template, and blog version all at the same time is the exact opposite of what you should normally do. It’s better to change only one thing at a time so that if something goes horribly wrong, you can trace what caused it.”

 - Matt Cutts (http://www.dullest.com/blog/switching-things-around/)

Why move a website?

First and foremost, why would you move a website? Well there’s a few reasons that I can think of right off the top of my head:

  • Your old domain name was inappropriate
  • You lost your old domain
  • You decided to change focus
  • You started on a sub domain and related to a full

What ever the reason, sometimes we have to move domains so the real question is … how do you do it right?

How to move a domain properly

Moving WordPress

First, lets assume that you’re using WordPress.

  1. Log into your phpMyAdmin or control panel and export the WordPress database to an SQL file.
  2. Save the SQL to your hard drive and open it in a text editor
  3. Search for the path of your old domain (i.e. thisismyurl.com) and replace it with your new domain (i.e. getawaygraphics.com) If you’re changing the path, (/blog/) to the root or something as well please make sure to search for the whole string!
  4. Search again!
  5. Change your server paths. This is a UNIX friendly path that the server uses to identify where you are on that hard drive. For example it may look like /var/www/t/thisismy/public_html/. If you don’t know your server path use my phpinfo() plugin for WordPress to find it.

Installing WordPress on a new domain

Now that you’ve altered your SQL for your old WordPress website,

  1. Install a copy of WordPress on your new domain
  2. Open your phpMyAdmin or control panel and paste the edited SQL into your SQL query box
  3. Wait …
  4. Open your new website in a separate web browser. Assuming everything worked, you should be up and running.

One final note, I always like to re-save my permalink options at this point to ensure the server writes a proper .htaccess file as sometimes it seems to act up.

Search Engine Optimization for the new domain

Next, you’ll want to make sure that the search engines know that you’re new domain is the correct domain and that your old domain is no longer active. You can do this using what is called a 302 redirect. Pretty fancy right? Not really, we’re geeks but … it’s important and that’s where Matt’s post Switching things around comes in handy.

Is it possible to schedule videos on YouTube?

Well, the simple answer is no but … as well most things on the web, there’s a great work around (thanks to Donace over at the Nexus for pointing it out to me via Twitter).

YouTubeStep One, upload your video but mark it private to ensure that it’s not live. This is always a good idea as it allows you to edit it online, change the title or keywords etc. before it’s live.

Step Two, mark it public on the proper day.

This isn’t nearly elegant as the built in timer in WordPress (How to schedule a post on WordPress) but it does have the advantage of allowing you to upload massive volumes of videos at the same time (I set mine to upload videos overnight) and I can release them on a schedule.

Scheduling a Reminder

Believe it or not, running a website or releasing videos is really hard work. Why? Mostly because it’s off in cyberspace and I forget to update the content! To get around this, one of the first tricks I used was to ask my wife to remind me but that got old very quickly so instead I started using iCal from Apple to remind me. If you’re on a PC you can use Outlook or if you’re looking for a free alternative, use the calendar built into Google’s Gmail!

The benefit of using something like Gmail is that the event may be shared with a group so if you’re not available somebody else on the team can do it for you.

Placing Google Analytics Code in a Dreamweaver Template

This is just a quick tip today, I got out of a training session and realized that a lot of people are still having a hard time understand Google Analytics so here are a few things for you to keep in mind.

First, for Analytics to be effective you need to include the code on all your webpages (not just the homepage). To do this in Dreamweaver, follow these simple steps:

  1. copy the code from your Google Analytics home page
  2. open dreamweaver and edit your template file
  3. switch to Code View
  4. place the Analytics code at the bottom of the file, between the </body> and </html> tags

Why between those two tags?

The Google Analytics code works by calling a remote script from Googles servers. Somethings this takes a bit of time, while it’s loading your webpage might stutter so let’s load all the page and display it to users first.

How to add Analytics to WordPress?

If you’re running WordPress, you can follow the steps above pretty well except in your case you’ll want to edit the footer.php which is found in your wp-content/themes/[yourthemename]/ directory.

I’ve lost everything? This can’t be good.

Lately I’ve seen a spike in traffic for an article I wrote last month called 25 Things to Do, Now That you’ve Lost Everything., I guess it’s good that people are finding me on the web but a lot of you guys are coming into the site using keywords such as:

  • I’ve lost everything
  • What to do, I’ve lost everything
  • Everything is lost, is suicide the answer?

Wow. Look, I want to be frank here … I’m not a therapist and most of my advice here is about formating HTML but I do want to share a thought with all of you, the global economic crisis aka the 21st Depression or the cluster fuck we call the new economy will get better … the world is pretty messed up right now and a lot of people have lost absolutely everything but in the end, it’ll all be OK.

It’ll be OK

Let’s say that again … it’ll all be OK in the end. This time last year, I was the Director Corporate of Technology for a leading university, I left my job a few weeks before the world imploded and it took me a long time to accept the global collapse, heck I’ve even written about it here a few times with articles like So You Lost Your Job, Now it’s Time to Live. and What to Do Now That you’ve Lost Your Job but the key is this … in the end, it’ll all work out.

How do I know that’ll work out? Because you’re already doing what it takes to make sure it does … you’re reading articles on the Internet by people who’ve been through it and come out on the other side, it’s a little like a storm and as long as you’ve got something to hang onto you’ll be OK in the end. So what should you hang onto? People, they’re all that matters.

Technology Workers

This post is sort of like a continuation of my piece, Technology Burnout, the Downside of the IT Industry where I talked about the stress levels a lot of IT workers feel and how in the end many people I’ve worked with over the past 15 years reached a point that they snapped and walked out of the industry. One such friend left his promising career and began kickboxing in Thailand, only to fall in love and have a whole new life.

Why am I telling you this? Because as depressing as it is find out my most popular SEO value this week is about losing everything, it’s even more depressing to see that so far today 12 people have found my website while surfing Google contemplating (even briefly) suicide. Don’t get me wrong, I’m actually a proponent of suicide as a choice for those with painful illnesses and I believe that everybody should have the right to choose when they check out of life but not as an alternative or a side effect of a few bad months in the economy.

What to do, instead of killing yourself

First, get over whatever it was that you just lost. Yep, that’s a big one but it’s crucial if you’re going to get back on the right track. Men, I believe have been trained to assume that our job is who we are. We introduce ourselves at parties and tell people what we do, so the loss of our job is in some ways like losing part of ourselves. Get over it. If you want to be something, order some business cards with a fancy title on it and start telling people what you are.

Are you out of money? No problem, Laid Off Technology Workers are Finding Work Online. There are plenty of jobs out there for people who are willing to look for them and try hard. Otherwise, go back to school, learn a new trade or build your own online business. Maybe it’s time to be your own boss?
