Web Host Rating

Welcome to my blog, please feel free to subscribe to my RSS feed, join me on Twitter or leave a comment.

Last week I posted my opinion of a great online web hosting review company and this got me thinking that I should point some of my readers to more quality web hosting guide websites, to help new users to the Internet marketing game understand more about the process of hosting.

The first question of course is what is website hosting all about? Simply put, website hosting the disc drive space your website resides at on the Internet. A slightly more complex way to look at it is that web site hosts are companies who specialize in renting hard drive and computer processing power to clients so that they can hold files on the web. Let’s take a look at how the process really works.

Step One – Have an idea.

So now that you’ve had an idea for a great website, you need to plan it out and just like any business you need to understand the risks, the rewards and the alternatives to building a great website. It’s a lot like planning to open a restaurant but instead of a menu and dishes to plate you have payment gateways or software to worry about but much like a restaurant you still need a plan.

Step Two – Build a website

Next you need to build a website, which either means hiring the designers and developers or doing it yourself. Once again, this is just like the real world … you need to hire somebody (even if it’s yourself) to plan where to hang lights, place bathrooms etc. in the office. The big difference? When you’re planning your office you usually already have a location in mind but with the web location doesn’t matter so we build the perfect website and then worry about where to host it.

Step Three – Host your website

So hosting is a little like renting space in an office building but unlike our real world example which depends on your address being close to your customers or other physical requirements, your website doesn’t need to be anywhere near your actual location. This means that when selecting a place to host your website, you’re free to pick from anywhere in the world instead of only worrying about local providers in your city.

In essence, web hosting companies spend massive amounts of money on extremely impressive technology which boils down to having just two, simple purposes:

  1. To keep your website online
  2. To keep your website fast

That’s why, at the end of the day I rely on BlueHost to keep not only thisismyurl.com running but dozens of my paying clients.

How to start your own business, easily.

Making money online is really a lot simpler than most people would ever imagine, it really comes down to three easy steps.

First, you need to have a product people want to buy.

Second, you need to be able to sell the product to people.

Finally, you need to be able to collect money from people effectively.

What’s great about the Internet is that all these things are already completed!

Let’s say for example that you want to sell t shirts online. The first thing you’ll need is to find a t shirts wholesale supplier. Luckily, you can pick up a blank t shirt or several hundred blank shirts from a good company. The beauty of ordering blank t-shirts is that you can literally print straight from you computer to meet the needs of custom orders!

The second step? Using WordPress, a simple store can be setup which allows you to sell products to users locally or around the world. WordPress is a perfect solution for many small business owners because when it’s setup correctly it can take care of organic marketing, search engine optimization, site maps and other technical aspects automatically.

Finally, you need to  be able to accept payment and ship the goods to users. Using PayPal, you can quickly and easily accept online payments plus PayPal has built in integration to the US Postal Service for easy printing of mailing labels. PayPal even lets you buy and print stamps directly from their easy to use website.

So there you have, three easy steps to finding a supplier, building a website and accepting online payments for small business owners just venturing onto the web. If you have questions, I’d love to hear from you or if you’d like to add to the discussion please feel free to contribute your thoughts.

Five Simple Tricks to Making Your Website More Successful

Building a successful website is tough, sometimes we get caught up in technical issues and forget that a website is meant to be for people so let’s take a few seconds and look at five simple tips which will make your website more successful.

Super Simple Navigation

The old KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) works perfectly for navigation.  For a website to work, it has to be intuitive and easy to understand by all levels of computer users. Take a moment and think about your page structure and why people come to your website.

For example, if your website offers software downloads ask yourself why people come to your site. If the answer is to download your software, get support about your software and buy your software … those three items should be key links on all pages of your site.

Make it Easy for People to Contact You

Above all else, the purpose of your website should be for prospective clients to reach you and existing business to connect with you. Ensuring your primary contact details are on each page is an easy way to help your business grow.

Think of Your Website as a Book

Every book has a title, which helps you find it. Books also have cheesy “marketing type” on the cover or back to summarize and entice the prospective buyer. Finally, the book has chapters, indexes and a logical flow that people understand.

Your website should have the same, an opening page with effective marketing type followed by a progressive series of pages designed to funnel readers towards your desired goal as well as an effective site map for easy navigation.

Focus Your Goal

I’m reminded of a scene from The Cider House Rules, ask yourself what your business is because (as the lead character soon discovers) a man needs to know his business. What is the business of your website? Why did you spend money and time having it built?  Now that you know what the purpose of your website is, focus your energy on creating content which will motivate your audience towards your goal.

Speak to Your Market

Websites are about your market, not you. Colors, text, language, graphics and content must be selected to promote your product or service to your audience in the most effective manner possible.

How do I make money with AdSense?

I think the Internet is awesome. There, I said it. The Internet is one of those amazing online places where anybody can make a great living and earn money while working from home. The web doesn’t make you go to work, it lets you stay home with your kids, work part time or even just earn cash after you’ve retired but the trick is that you need to know how to do it and I’m pretty easy going about telling people how to do it here on my site.

Get a website

The first step to making money on the Internet is to get a website. For those of you who think getting a website is hard work, you’re insane. Building a website is hard work but having one? It’s as easy as clicking a button and watching a few videos so step one to making money at home, sign up for a great hosting company like Bluehost and everything you need to get started.

Once you’ve signed up, installing an easy to manage website tool like WordPress is free and easy.

Get some advertising

What’s the biggest hurdle to making money on the Internet? The money dummy. Luckily Google makes it incredibly easy by offering a program called AdSense. How it works is pretty simple, you publish a website and they supply advertisers that what to put ads on websites about your subject matter. The more people visit your website, the more people see your ads and the more money you make.

Write some content

So now you have a website and you have the ads setup so the next trick is to write content that people really want to read. Write often and write well, otherwise there is only one trick … write about something that people care to read about.

Some great AdSense links today to help make money online

Watching a Google AdSense Webinar is a little like studying for a physics exam that’s being marked by Einstein, there’s a lot to catch and also a lot that you can miss so it’s wonderful that they post the video to YouTube as well so that we can rewatch it.

There’s an interesting article I was liked to over technews.com about Google AdSense publishers and their privacy settings, spoiler alert … most people have not updated their privacy policies. Here’s a hint to everybody … privacy policies are mandatory for all AdSense websites and Google can refuse to issue payments ( or terminate publishers for not updating) if you’re not meeting your TOS’s. (I’d better go check mine …)

Speaking of AdSense, I gotta say that I absolutely loved reading Do You Want To Increase Your Google Adsense Revenue? today. There’s a lot of content on the web dedicated to how to make money using the AdSense etc. but this is a pretty simple little piece, well written and easy to follow for people who are either just starting out or maybe need a refresher. You might also want to give Adsense Good or Bad?, Do You Want To Increase Your Google Adsense Revenue? and 6 Easy Ways to Increase your Adsense Revenue a read while you’re at it.

Today’s been a pretty busy day, so I haven’t been able to read as much as I’d have liked but if you’re looking for more help with AdSense, check out the AdSense Optimization Webinar.

10 simple things every housewife can do to make money online

We all know that times are a little tighter than they have been for a very long time but that doesn’t change the fact that a lot of families simply can’t afford for both parents to be working out of the house. With that in mind, what can a housewife stay at home parent  do online to help bring in a little bit of extra money and work from home?

Here are ten simple things that you can do from home to make a bit of extra money, without having to hire a baby sitter:

Work from home writing

There are literally thousands of companies out there looking to hire part time writers and to be honest, your writing doesn’t even always have to be that good. If you’re willing to take feedback, most website owners will help you along and a single article can easily net $200 or more.

Work at home designing websites

If you have a creative flair, take a bit of time and learn the basics of web design! You can leave the coding up to somebody else, or learn to tackle it down the road. Once you’ve build a couple simple portfolio websites to get your feet wet, use a service like CraigsList in your area to help find local companies who need designers.

Moderate online forums

Tons of businesses need people to help keep track of their online reputations and help police forums. You can often work from your own home as much or as little as you can afford and your work will help keep forums up dated and safe.

Research online for spare cash

Online research is big business, you can work for companies or local governments. I know several people who do this type of work freelance for reporters all over the world, helping to make sure stories are accurate and well sourced.

Blog about something you love

Blogging is one of the easiest ways for a woman to make money online and you’d be surprised what people read about! Blogging about everything from children’s clothes, dollhouse accessories, gardening, home decorating and even cost savings is a great way to earn money from Google AdSense, a free online advertising service who will pay you to host their ads!

Become a Twitter consultant

Do you know how to Twitter? What about Facebook and RSS? If these things make sense to you, take a deep breathe because you’re in high demand! Companies need casual employees just like you to update their social media marketing, spread the world of their products and market their message through social media, all from the comfort of your own home.

Sell your expertise while looking after the kids

Make money online doing what you’ve always done! Get a Skype number and run your own online business from home offering professional services during naps and playtime.  Plenty of professionals are too busy to chat on the phone away so setting yourself up as an email or text based business is a great way for them to ask you questions without you taking up their time, and it’s a perfect way for you to stay home and work full time.

Build a website about your town

Put together a free website about your town and let Google sell ads to cover your costs. People are always searching for details about your community, so why not write about local attractions, stores, parks and more?

Run an online store

These days, you can run an online store to sell just about anything and you can do it without leaving your home. PayPal accepts payments and takes care of shipping for you, so all you need is something to sell right? Guess what … there are plenty of companies who will ship products directly to your client, with your name on the package! Even better? Ask a local shop if you can be a commissioned sales person working from home and sell their product online!

Put people in touch for money

You don’t have to sell anything but if you happen to be good at it, great! Why not keep a list of people you know who can design websites and another list of people who want websites built? Playing match maker online is a great way to earn a lot of extra cash without having to spend anything but a little bit of time.

I’d love to hear your ideas for how people can make money working at home or stories about success in this economy so please feel free to comment below!

Make money online with Google AdSense

google adsense earnings Make money online with Google AdSense image

A few days back I wrote a piece called What are the most expensive search terms? and talked a bit about the Google Keyword Tools which allows you to see how much keywords are worth. It’s designed to allow marketing professionals gauge the value of an ad campaign by allowing them to see which words are valuable and the volume of traffic which searches for a given keyword or key phrase but it can also be used by online publishers to make money online by understanding how to traffic shape our blogs for better keyword performance.

How does it work?

The tool allows you to select a number of factors when reviewing the value of a website or keyword pattern, first you may select the specific countries or language of traffic, this allows you to focus on a particular market when posting ads to potential blogs but that’s not what we want … after all as a blog owner I don’t mind if I make money from people surfing in Australia or Austria right? So the first thing you’ll want to do when setting your sights on new keywords is change the default settings from United States to All Countries and Territories. This will allow you to see the whole world’s value.

keywordtoolexternal Make money online with Google AdSense image

Next, as you can see from the graphic above you’ll want to review your existing website content for keywords. Specific descriptive words and phrases are great for people who want to sell something but as a blog publisher, you to understand what Google currently thinks your website is about so that you can assess how to steer your blog in the future.

For example, when I search for keywords on thisismyurl.com, I receive a list of keywords that Google believes I am blogging about. They are: make money on the (7), how to make money (6), way to make money (6), make money online (6), work at home (7), work from home (5), make money (30), to make (5), how to (8), at home (7), money making (18), from home (6), data entry (9), earn money (7), money (19), online (8), blog (10), business (6), website (7), Miscellaneous keywords (23)

Ironically, if you’d asked me what my website was about I’d have told you that it was about organic marketing, wordpress or even SEO before I’d have told you it was about making money online, so it just goes to show how cool this tool really is.

Making money with the data

show esimated cost per clicks Make money online with Google AdSense imageThe next part of the puzzle is to look at the Estimated Cost Per Click (CPC) for keywords on the site but there’s a trick here, by default it’s not shown! Once you have the Estimated CPC column showing, you’re almost done. The next key to truly understanding the value of your keywords is to switch the Match Type to Exact (you can just see it in the graphic here). That will make sure the data you’re looking at is for exactly what you think you’re looking at.

The resulting list will provide you with a breakdown of both the estimated value per click and the number of times that keyword appears in Google’s search results for a given time period. For example, the phrase how to make money on the internet is worth $4.01 and is searched for 9,900 times globally in a given month. Sounds pretty good right? Well it is, except coming soon (which I just put up a free template for) is worth $1.30 and is searched for 201,000 times. Which is worth more? Luckily I’m pretty good with basic business math so here’s a comparison:

  1. $4.01 x 9,900 = $39,699
  2. $1.30 x 201,000 = 261,300

So using basic high school math, it’s easy to determine that a website would be much better off focusing it’s content on lower value keywords with a higher search percentage unless the total accumulated value of a keyword family outweigh the value of an isolated phrase. Let me explain. while an isolated keyword comparison would imply that coming soon is a superior subject to blog about (and earn money from) the phrase appears only once in the hundred phrases Google analyzed vs. dozens of variations of the phrase how to make money on the internet which while independently do not add up to much, combined far exceed an isolated phrase.

Looking at how to make money in Numbers

To compare the real value of key phrases and the true potential for making money on the Internet it’s important to look at numbers outside the Keyword Tools, for that I export the data into Apple Numbers, a spread sheet tool which allows me to group key phrases and do rapid data modeling to determine the most profitable avenue for an online site. In the case of my own blog, the top ten keyword patterns shape up to look like this:

keyword value graph Make money online with Google AdSense image

While the above graph doesn’t group keywords and phrases into select groups it does provide an immediate and staggering visual tool to truly comprehend the value of some keywords over others. While combining keyword phrases would lower the impact, the keyword AdSense is clearly the most substantial value at nearly $10 million per month in AdWord placements.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this rather basic breakdown of my own website and I hope it gives you some insight into how to make money online with Google AdSense yourself. As always, I’m rather shameless in my self promotion and would love to remind you that I’m available for onsite consultation anywhere in the world assuming the temperature there is between 82° and 96°.

How can I make $100 a day from my blog?

One of the most intersting things about my job is that I get to look behind the scenes at dozens of websites ranging from small ‘mom and pop’ style blogs to large web magazines run by multinationals and do you know what I’ve discovered? We’re all in the same boat.

Statistically that is, we’re all pretty much the same. There’s a theory in retail advertising which states that assuming all other aspects to be equal, the only determining factor between revenues is square footage. Simply put … if there are two stores in town selling hockey sticks and each has a good location, spends the same on advertising and treats customers well then the only reason one store sells more sticks than the second is because it is bigger. I think there’s a similar concept at work on the web.

Size Matters

Assuming that your website is the same as another and that you have roughly the same visitor volume, you’ve both been online for the same amount of time and you both practice roughly the same traffic building strategies, in theory your two websites should earn roughly the same amount of revenue but if your website posts twice the volume of content, your website will generate additional traffic and therefore money.

Content Matters

The other determining factor to your income level is content. Say for example that the two websites described above each produce exactly the same volume of content, logic dictates that they will generate roughly the same volume of advertisement clicks right? Wrong. Once of the more interesting things that I’ve noticed watching dozens of websites is that some sites such as cooking and home repair websites generate a significantly higher volume of clicks over technical websites such as mine. This isn’t to say that they get more clicks overall but that they receive a higher click rate pre thousand visitors.

The other reason that content matters is the value of the ads located on your website. Renovations for example has an average cost of $4 per click through for ads as opposed to $2 for web design. If you take both the value (50% higher) and the increased click through rate per thousand of non-technical website, you’ll notice very quickly that websites which focus on non computer content are more likely to earn money.

Why is this? I actually have a pretty simple explanation for it in that ads on web design sites tend to be repetitive and people surfing for technical details are more immune to advertising due to increased exposure to web content.

So, how can I make $100 from my blog?

Step one, if my analysis is correct … don’t run a technology blog :) Actually that’s great advice but since I am running a technology blog (actually I run closer to 20 blogs on a variety of subjects) what I really need to do is understand the statistics of running a blog which luckily, Google makes available for free with Analytics and Keyword Tools.

What are the most expensive search terms?

You know what? Sometimes I’m amazed by things that I didn’t even know people don’t know and this week, my friend Josh over at noonanworks.com caught me off guard when he told me that he’d never considered the idea that some Google ads (from AdWords etc) are worth more money than others. In fact, since Google AdWords placements are acquired exclusively through bidding, some keywords and key phrases (combinations of keywords) are worth a fortune while others are almost worthless.

Take for example popular keywords such as Warcraft and WordPress, they’re practically worthless ($1.60 per click, of which the publisher receives roughly 50%) while other keywords such as mesothelioma are worth $45 or more per click. Ever wonder why so many people put up websites for consolidated loans? Those keywords are worth a fortune at $49. There are lists (mostly outdated) of the expensive keywords at Search Engine Watch and cached Google pages but if you really want to know what keywords are worth, why no go straight to the source and ask Google?

(btw, as a shameless piece of self promotion … once you’ve found the keywords that you’d like to build your business on … why not hire me to build your site?)

How to write a post to only appear in RSS feeds

On many of my websites (which I almost always power with WordPress) I like to give people incentives to signup for my RSS feeds. This let’s me keep in touch with them and helps keep people connected to my website but it also offers me a great advantage in that I know that my audience is building.

One of the things that I do is offer content for those users in the form of a contest or promotion which only appears in my RSS feeds or often appears in my RSS feed days (or weeks) before it appears on the main site. This allow allows me to test content, get feedback from regulars etc. before it’s live.

Now there are a few plugins and tutorials on how to do this (Creating Posts That Appear Only In RSS) but I prefer to do it in a much easier way.

  1. I create a category in WordPress where I’ll post items for the RSS feed.
  2. I’ll exclude that category from results pages

That’s it .. very simple really.

For example, on my archives.php page I simply add the code ‘exclude=X’ (where X is my category ID) from the results, which ensures that any article found exclusively in my RSS feed is not published anywhere else.

The only problem is … this method forces me to add and remove items from the list in a method similar to how we used to have to place sticky posts in WordPress.

What do you guys think? Is there an easier way for me to do it?

Want to know how to make money online? Stop thinking so hard.

The other day I was wrapping up a new website for the Fredericton Meals on Wheels organization, it was a charity gig that I happily donated my time on (thanks again for the support everybody) which led me to work with a well known local community activist, John Carty. He’s the new director of the MOW program and a man who’s master the art of giving to the community, funny thing was that he said something hilarious one day when I was on the phone with him and it’s brilliant advice for web entrepreneurs.

Everybody loves pets.

What he actually said what that everybody loves animals, he used to be the head of the Fredericton SPCA so he’s a man who knows about animals. During another chapter of his life he ran for local office and he discovered that most people had a pet in the house when they came to the door. I hope John doesn’t mind me sharing this story, but the point is pretty simple … people love animals. So what’s this got to do with making money online?

i can has cheezburger if I tell you? Honest to Google, while the rest of us are killing ourselves building complex social networking engines, marketing tools, SEO optimization mechanisms and writing content on everything from how to make money blogging to Google in your TVthese guys are making a mint doing nothing more than putting funny captions on pictures.

Want to know how to make money online? Stop thinking so hard. imagehttp://icanhascheezburger.com/ may seem like a joke at first glance but this cheesy little website stacks up like this:

Basic Traffic Statistics
Alexa Traffic Ranking: 2,780
Google PageRank: 7
Average of 709,717 backlinks from major search engines.

You read that right … a PageRank of 7 and over 700,000 backlinks to a website with cute pictures of kittens and some funny text. Their website’s estimated worth (for the domain name, not the business) … $2,202,868.

I’m not knocking icanhascheezburger.com, honestly I’m just jealous that I didn’t think of it first. The website is a  WordPress.com hosted website powered by the greatest tool ever, it also means that there was basically no startup costs to put it together. Basically a domain name and a free account.

My point I suppose (if I indeed have one) is that much like my recent article So You Lost Your Job, Now it’s Time to Live., and How make money online? the only obstacle between you and making money online is your own desire to start doing it.

Well … I think there’s only one thing for me to do then …

Are you online to make money?

There are a lot of reasons to be online, not all of them are to make money as we talked about in a post last week (What’s Your Revenue Model?) but if you are online to make money the question has to be .. how do you make enough money monthly to help with the bills or even as a primary income source?

Before you know exactly how much money you can make online you need to understand how money is made online and what revenue models exist. Once that’s accomplished you need to take a look at how much money you can make and the methods for reaching those goals.

If you’re online to make money then you need to look at how a basic advertising model such as Google Adwords can earn you cash. It’s actually pretty straight forward although it’s a little daughting for some new comers.

  1. Sign up for a free account with Google Adsense
(note that when you’re selling ad spots you use Adsense, when you’re buying ad placements you use Adwords)
  2. Register a domain name and setup hosting with a company such as BlueHost
  3. Upload your website to your domain, or use a free blogging package such as WordPress
  4. Install your Adsence code into your WordPress or website template
  5. Promote your website and write great content

These five easy steps are all that it takes for anybody from an out of work stock trader to a stay at home mom or retired couple to make real money online. It works because there is always somebody one step behind your learning curve in a chosen specialty or your stage of life. The first true step to making online money is realizing that the things that you know are valuable and people want to share in your wisdom and experiences, it doesn’t matter if your 25 or 75 … you know things and people want to read about it.

How much money can you make online?

That question is a pretty big one to answer and it depends upon a few things:

  1. How much time can you invest in being successful online?
  2. What can you share with the world?
  3. Will people want to read about it?

Askthebuilder.com pulls in $40,000 a month promoting home building and renovation expertise. The trick is to establish your CPM (cost per thousand) for a market and increase your website’s traffic to build off of that traffic. The Adsense report to the right demonstrates how a simple website can build not only increased traffic but also revenue from visitors with the placement ads.

In that example, the website owner received 35,243 page views yesterday which resulted in 265 clicks and earnings of $128.33 for the day. Assuming this was an average day for the author, his revenues for February would be $3,593.24 … not bad for running an online blog about something he (or she) was passionate about.
