WordPress Theme imageThis theme may go down in history as my lamest theme ever but it’s a utilitarian theme designed with a simple purpose, to display a Coming Soon! message on the homepage as a notice to new comers while the website is under construction.

To install the theme, simply download the ZIP file and uncompress it before uploading the resulting /coming-soon/ directory to your web server.

Why build it?

Actually it’s a funny thing, I’ve written before that sometimes when you write a blog you need to review your Analytics (The Vomitorium and Data Mining) and looking over my numbers today, I’ve seen a steep climb in the number of people searching for a template like this.

The Coming Soon! theme offers users the ability to quickly add a page while still allowing you to track the vital statistics and add plugins such as Google Analytics or keyword tools. The theme makes full use of the header and footer functions, without displaying any actual website content.

Customizing the Theme

This theme is a bare bones WordPress theme. In fact it doesn’t even make use of the Loop so if you’d like to customize it by adding a graphic or changing the text, simply open the index.php file and add basic HTML within the <div> tags.

Great Idea. I followed the instructions over at out:think and I got everything to work (almost) I was going back to ask a question and I saw your ping back there. So maybe I will ask you? Once you have the coming soon page up, how do you edit the regular blog? I mean now I can’t see the blog in action unless I go to preview because the coming soon page is there. Any other suggestions?

  2. @patience – great question!

If you’ve followed the steps in my tutorial How to create a Coming Soon page for WordPress you’ll be able to see the live site by visiting your homepage and adding the phrase ?wptheme=xxxxx to the site address above. (the xxxxx is of course the directory name your theme is stored in, so to see the default theme you’d type http://www.thisismyurl.com/?wptheme=default for example)

Haha, looks cool! Between, can I change the wording to “Under Construction” or anything else?
I think this can be done by writing the coding in a Notepad and save it as index.pho file, upload to FTP (Rename the original index.php first). Between, I’m not sure whether any errors will be occured if we change the original index.php file to index1.php to other?

I’m on my way to try this theme in my wordpress.

  8. Patience says:

Okay Chris I got it to work but I used a different plug in. I used Theme Test Drive instead of the theme switcher reloaded. Thanks again for the article/

Thank you for creating this theme!

I see how you can view another theme while you work on it by adding ?wptheme=xxxxxx to the homepage link, but how do you preview the rest of the site’s theme? when i click around and still add that parameter, i get an error page. Any ideas? I’d also like to preview post pages, etc. not just the homepage.
