A few days back I wrote a piece about photographers websites and how many fail to make the most of effective SEO techniques to improve their organic marketing capacity. This got me thinking about one of my favorite websites, a photographer/model forum called Model Mayhem and I wanted to know how it stacked up as an online marketing platform.
What did Google think of it?
Google reported back that Model Mayhem had a PageRank of 5, which is in keeping with its status and the 3,663 known websites that link directly to it. What's more interesting to me is how quickly Google returned 200 effective keywords of the popular website:

As you can see, Google understands the content and has indexed the websites core message clearly.
What did Alexa have to say about the site?
While Google's great at telling me what a website is about (and even worth), it's Alexa I turn to when I want to really understand a website. Alexa tracks web usage through browser enabled software to determine where their members travel on the Internet. It's the closest measurement we have of usage patterns and paints an interesting picture for analysis. Alexa believes Model Mayhem's closest competitors on the Internet are onemodelplace.com, llnw.com, model-kartei.de and petmd.com. The analysis also reveals that Model Mayhem is an incredibly popular website with a traffic ranking of 1,106. The website is visited by more men than women, aged 18 to 34. Most of the traffic has some college education, traffic does not come from school locations and most do not have children.
There are 833,651 monthly visitors to Model Mayhem whom on average visit the site 3.09 times per month (2,580,878 visits), loading an average of 26 pages per visit over a 10 minute period. If you apply the industry average of 0.04% click through rate to the 67.1 million page views per month Model Mayhem receives, the website receives 26,841 clicks per month on their inline advertising at a rate of $0.72 per click or roughly $19,000 per month in ad sales, based on industry averages.
Developing marketing plans for websites and ensuring website are profitable for my clients is just one of the many things I do as a freelance website consultant.
