Packaging for Success

Have you ever judged a book by its cover? Actually I guess a better way to ask that question is, have you ever not judged a book by its cover? Of course not, how things look are important to us and as consumers we’re always looking for more than the product inside the container, we’re also looking for the packaging … it’s a little like wrapping paper at Christmas, we want to feel spoiled when we buy it.

Packaging isn’t limited to a grocery store (although it is a perfect example of packaging), we also judge the quality of a product based on its packaging at trade shows and industrial equipment, taking the time to put a little bit of trim work and paint on an old house almost always increases its value in the marketplace so why then, do so many people forget to properly package their own products?

Tropicana’s branding gamble
Packaging is such a funny thing that  we often don’t even notice how powerful it is but take the below example of what happened when Tropicana Orange Juice changed the packaging for its iconic orange juice from the traditional design on the left (with a great big orange) to a more upscale, generic style on the right.

The result (beyond a ton of media attention) was a consumer rebellion at the cash register, designers seem to like the new design but consumers hated it. The result? The company switched back to their original design. More importantly it helps designers and marketing people remember that packaging, whether it be retail or commercial is critical to the success of a product.

Fredericton Meals on Wheels

First off, I want to thank everybody who took part in my Christmas promotion to help local organizations by donating your links to thisismyurl.com, there was a wonderful response to the promotion and because of all the kindness you showed me the local Fredericton chapter of the Meals on Wheels program has benefited with a new website.

fredericton meals on wheels Fredericton Meals on Wheels imageThe website is powered by WordPress which gives the staff at the organization the ability to quickly update content, it features the hugely successful theme iNove with a few minor changes and small army of plugins designed to optimize the experience for non technical staff.

Thanks again to everybody who helped out this year, I look forward to running the promotion again this year!

I got a new page rank for Christmas

So this year I wasn’t sure what to get myself for Christmas but at the last minute I came up with the perfect gift, a new Pagerank. I know most of you are either saying that you have no idea what a page rank is or that you simply don’t care but to me, earning a promotion in my sites authority is a huge step and I truly want to say thank you to each and every person who’s helped me along the way.

So what am I going to do with my new fancy page rank of 5? (that’s right Bavota … I kick butt) well, I’m going to keep doing what I’ve always done I suppose, I’m going to keep writing content which I hope adds a little bit to the rich tapestry we call the Internet and I’m going to try  to help people learn about technology and with luck, I’m going to be able to keep linking to amazing websites who will in turn think something I’ve written is worth linking to.

Thanks to everybody who reads my blog, I love hearing from you and hope you’ve all had as great a holiday season as I have. Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s my anniversary and I have a turkey to cook.

Search Engine Optimization Services

Do you remember years ago, the movie told us that if you built it, they would come? Well that’s simply not true. You can hope for a Christmas miracle but trust me when I tell you that the vast majority of the time, energy and resources you spend associated with your website will be related to the marketing of it. In retail, there’s a theory which states that if all marketing considerations are equal, your market percentage will directly correlate to your square footage in that market.

The web is still too young for us to come up with such a snappy statement but there’s a similar concept for us. Your website’s success is directly associated to the quality of your search engine optimization.

Why? That makes no sense right? Especially if, as a couple of my recent clients told me, you don’t plan on using Google as the main source of your traffic. Well there’s part of the problem … where you plan to generate traffic is irrelevant, traffic is organic and it ebbs or flows based on what it, not you dictate so if you’re looking to get more website traffic it’s time to find a good partner to help.

How? The first thing you need to do is either start reading a lot of materials and blogs or find a search engine optimization company who can assist by offering comprehensive search engine optimization services. If you want to save some upfront money, you can start by reading basically everything by Matt Cutts, he’s one of Google’s boys … OK, secretly I think Matt might actually be Google. It’s just a theory but I think that Google is run off his laptop, when you search for something he personally types the results. Maybe not, but USA Today has a great article with him on driving traffic to your website.

When? That’s an easy one. It’s an odd fact but the best time to optimize your website is the exact same as the best time to plant an apple tree, ten years ago. The second best time is today.

If you’re looking for some great websites to help you better understand Search Engine Optmization, give these great articles a read:

Hard Apple Cider, just in time for Christmas

Apple Cider

Apple Cider

For those of you who know me, you’ll know that I’m not much of a beer drinker. In fact, when I drink beer I get sick (and not the good kind of sick) but luckily, my darling blushing bride is from Somerset England and years ago, she introduced me to the greatest thing since sliced bread wheels … apple cider.

What is Apple Cider? Apple cider is an alcoholic drink made from the pressed juices of apples. Most American’s would call it Hard Cider and it hovers at about 8% alcohol, sweeter than a beer and more similar to a sparkling wine.

The process for making cider is virtually identical to making wine and requires the following ingredients:

  1. 5.5 gallons of apple juice.
  2. 1 lb. honey
  3. 1 lb. white sugar
  4. 1 package of champaign yeast
How do you make cider? Oddly, it’s dead simple. Take the before mentioned ingredients, place them in a pail with an airlock, mix and leave it alone for a few weeks. If you don’t have an airlock, you can buy one for a couple of dollars along with your yeast or you can use a balloon to capture the escaping gasses.
If making your own cider sounds a little too challenging for you, there are some wonderful varieties of apple cider on the market for you to try. If you live near Toronto Canada, the Irish Embassy Pub has an Irish cider named Magners on tap, while most others stock Strongbow. Throughout the US there are a variety including my personal favorite in the US, Woodchuck Cider
I’ve been meaning to write this piece for a few days but I’ve been a bit distracted but if you get out there an buy a bucket today, you’ll have fresh cider just in time for the holidays :)

Bloody Mess of a WordPress Theme

bloody hell 288x300 Bloody Mess of a WordPress Theme image

This theme started out as a Christmas theme for WordPress but when I couldn’t find a good set of Christmas lights it all went horribly, horribly wrong. It’s based off the Free Community Friendly Theme I did earlier today so you can see how easily things can be modified.

As with my earlier themes, this one is optimized for search engine optimization.

To do this, make sure the information is accurate and timely and that you include the tools required to print, email and forward the newsletter easily.
