How to make money with Google ads.

So I received my first genuine question today from my new “ask a question” form and it was a doozy, Lisa from Southern Ontario wants to know how to make money with Google ads. This is a great question because it addresses a few others along the way.

How do I make money with Google ads?

An example of ads which appear here on my website.

An example of ads which appear here on my website.

Google runs two programs in tandem, the first is called Google Adwords and it allows business owners such as yourself to buy advertising on the Google network. Adwords allows people to bid on the amount they’d like to pay for an advertisement and then, if their bid is high enough to win out over the competition the ads appear on either the Google search results associated with the keywords or websites associated with the keywords.

This is where the second program, called AdSense comes in. AdSense allows website owners such as me to place Google’s Adword campaigns on my website. You’ll notice for example in my search results there is a banner ad (728×90 pixels) that appears as well as an ad in the comments below. These banners are created automatically from Google and appear in my site content, based on the keywords for the pages that I’ve included.

How do I install Google Adsense on my website?

Once you’ve setup your ads by choosing the size, colors and type of ads that you would like to appear Google will present you with code such as the folllow:

[source lang="javascript"]<script type="text/javascript">
<!– google_ad_client = "pub-9144171931162286";
/* 728×90, created 9/21/08 */
google_ad_slot = "2146157422";
google_ad_width = 728;
google_ad_height = 90;
//–>
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"></script>[/source]

To place this code into your website there are a couple of options. If you’re using WordPress for example you can place it into your sidebar using the text widget, or you can edit your theme files to place the code in the appropriate places. Sometimes this is a little difficult for non programmers, so if you need a hand you should post a request at http://jobs.wordpress.net/

How do I sell ad space using Google ads?

That’s actually the best part! You don’t. Google automatically matches you with the most content focusses advertisers from around the planet. Essentially, Google takes all the matching requests from its Adwords program and searches for websites in the AdSense program to serve ads to, which means that you never have to sell anything.

How much can I make from Google ads?

That’s a tough question, Google ads work on two principles. First, how many times is a page visited and secondly, how many times does somebody click the ads on your website? Google ads are paid per click, so if a million people visit your website in a given day then you’re likely to attract a reasonable volume of click through traffic, which will result in increased revenue.

Each time an ad is clicked, you earn money so the amount you make is dependent entirely on how many people see and click the ads. To determine exactly what an ad on your website is worth, try visiting the Keyword Tools and generate a free report on your (and your competitors) website. Remember, you’re likely to receive a little less than half of whatever Google reports on this page.

How do I get paid from Google ads?

Each month that your Google AdSense total is more than $100, Google will mail a cheque (or transfer funds) to you. If your account hasn’t reached $100 yet, no problem … the total simply carries over to the next month and will payout when it hits the $100 level.

Can I encourage people to click my ads or click them myself?

No. Serious, don’t do it. If Google catches you (remember they’re REALLY smart there) they’ll not only close your account but refund any revenue you’ve earned to your advertisers … it’s simply not worth the risk.

A Tribute to Red

I love all colors equally but this week I wanted to do a post about the color red. Sure it’s not SEO related and most of my readers don’t appreciate the beauty of red but good old #990000 is our friend, so today I’m going to post some great photographs I’ve found that use the color red. I hope you’ll see something that inspires you to build great looking sites.

How many words can be made using only HEX color values?

Did you know that there  are over 15,000 words in the English language that are exactly six letters long? Nope, neither did I until I started fumbling around on the Internet to find out for myself. Now, that fact alone might not be very impressive but … to anybody who knows anything about HTML and CSS the number six has a special meaning. It’s the exact number of alpha numeric characters needed to make up a color in code. Each of the six characters is represented by a number (0 … 9) or a letter (a … f) representing the final six values for a total of 15 values per character and a total of 16,777,216 possible colors.

Some of the colors are pretty easy to guess, black is #000000 (all numbers are at 0) to white which uses the full f value of each character for #ffffff. In between there are literally millions of variations but what I was really interested in today (OK, I’m a little bored) was how many of the 16,777,216 combinations also existed in the six letter lexicon of the English language. For the record, my wife wasn’t surprised to discover this hadn’t been discussed to death … I was.

Here’s what I did. I found out how many colors made up the hex spectrum and them I searched the internet for six letter words. I settled on a list of 15,552 scrabble words, that I moved  into a text editor and threw out any words starting with a letter combination of fg or above, this paired the list down to just 4,683 words.

Next, I ran a Regular Expression search ([g-z]) to match any line with a letter exceeding the letter f and tossed it out. What I was left with was a surprising …. 16 words that can be made into colors using HTML. I’ve included them as a list along with a color sample and a link to the definition.

Top 10 Web Site Mistakes That Businesses Make

Many small businesses fail to take advantage of the great, low cost marketing opportunities found on the web and make costly mistakes which can be easily avoided.

Where are you?

I don’t get it but a lot of small businesses think hiding their contact information is a good idea. I could get into why your contact information on every page is good for localized search engines, or how it could help regional linking but you know what? It’s simply common sense for a business to want prospects to be able to find them. If you’re a public facing business (retail, restaurant etc) your address should be on every page, it’s that simple. Other companies need an easy to find link, clearly labeled to a contact page.

What do you do?

Honestly, I’m a web designer and half the time I can’t figure out what companies do based on their website. Does your website over think the process? Most do. If you’re a restaurant, post a menu. If you’re an inn, show me your rooms. Post your product or service in the easiest, clearest way possible.

No Images

The only thing worse than a website without contact details? A boring, stale, dull one with lots of text. Pictures say a thousand words right? Well, stop typing so much and buy a $100 camera. Take pictures of your products and people, let me see your lobby, reception area, board room and then I’ll feel better about spending money with you.

Your Company is Run By Robots

Web site are not about technology, stop worrying about fonts and colors. Let me see your people, this goes back to the picture issue above but honestly, it’s worth a second point. Who’s won awards this month? New hires? Experienced professional? Let me know! By the way, having a video on your website is brilliant, people love videos.

Fire and Forget Web Sites

Nothing ticks me off faster than a business who launches a website and ignores it. The Internet is the first place your prospects are going to go to, and they’ll simply move on if ignore them. Answer every email, provide updated content, add a blog to keep content fresh and follow up on every comment on your site. Prompt service wins business.

Outdated Content

If your business wants to succeed, respect your website is an extension of your physical business. Look at it all the time, assign it to somebody in your office or if you can’t afford the time, assign it to me but for the love of all that is digital … Christmas is over in December, make sure your website isn’t promoting St. Nick by News Years. The same goes for the big trade show, holidays, news events and staffing requests.

Butchering the Brand

If your website doesn’t look like your brochure, fire your web designer. Honestly, there’s no reason for your logo to be different on a website. There’s no reason you don’t look as good no, scratch that. There’s no reason you don’t look BETTER on the web than you do in print or in person. Think about it, full color printing costs money but on the web, it’s free.

Broken Down Sites

A 404 Error is the technical term for a website page that no longer exists. 500 is the error code for sites which failed to execute a PHP script from your site … if your clients ever see this, you have no business running a website.

Web Sites Designed by Friends and Family

If your cousin is an award winning designer, hire her but if she’s a database administrator or makes a living putting monitors on desks for a living … walk away. Your website is an extension of your brand, it’s about marketing not technology so hire a designer with a proven track record building quality sites.

Typo’s and Mistakes

Broken images, grammatical errors, poor spelling … these are signs of a business owner who doesn’t care about the company and that tells me that they’re not going to care about the product they sell. Before a website goes live, make sure it’s done.

Effective online marketing is easy, it’s cost effective and it’s a key element of the marketing program of a modern, success business.

If you’re already running a website, take a few moments and ask yourself:

  • Does my website look better than my business card?
  • Does my website tell my clients what I do?
  • Does my website tell prospects how to reach me?
  • Is my website easy to use?
  • Is my website’s content fresh?

Once you’ve asked yourself those questions, ask 20 other people those five simple questions about your website and really listen.

Simple Design Ideas to Increase Your Web Sales

How can a simple web design help increase your web sales? More importantly, does your website make it easier or harder for people to shop on your website? These are some pretty basic questions that every website owner should be asking themselves but oddly, most of the time the choice of how to design a website is left up to the IT department, the same people who put monitors on desks and wear Pong t-shirts to the office.

If we take a look at two highly successful websites, Apple.ca and Bell.ca (yes, I am Canadian) we can see what millions of dollars of market research has determined is good design.

bell canada 20081008 300x217 Simple Design Ideas to Increase Your Web Sales imageBell Canada had determined that using only a few colors will help them tie online branding into real world branding. The few colors they’ve used correspond to the colors they use in their print materials but it also simplifies the design, allowing us to focus on the content. They easily provide options for shopping, navigation and support with little confusion for the user. Simply put, users can not make the wrong choice because Bell has made it too easy for them to make the right choice.

apple 20081008 260x300 Simple Design Ideas to Increase Your Web Sales imageThere are a few proven, indisputable truths in marketing and Apple has used every one of them in their corporate website. First and foremost, only show people what they need to see. If they want to see more, they can click the carefully designed tabs but by default users should only seen content that will help them make the decision to purchase. Secondly, Apple has been sure to design an interface that’s so easy to use that anybody from a grade school kid to a grandparent could figure it out. That’s not an accident, so we should learn from it. Finally, the design is clean. People like clean, clear and professional.

If you own your own website and you’re disappointed in the volume of sales, take a look at your own website and then look at those two examples above. Really look. If you want to compete on the web, your site should be as easy to use and professional at the ones featured here.
