WordPress Wednesdays

Are you looking for work as a WordPress developer? Automattic, the makers of WordPress put together a neat little post that’s showing WordPress is now an in demand skill on Elance, the popular freelance marketplace website. It’s also worth noting however that WordPress runs it’s own cool little employment board over at http://jobs.wordpress.net/ where prospective blog owners try to meet up with WP gurus. There’s another wonderful, secret mailing list … OK it’s not a secret but most people don’t know about it called WP Pro  where a dozen or so job requests a week come across your email box.

Here’s a wonderful piece that combines my love of gaming with my love of WordPress,  Peter’s done a great job of making the process of setting up an online gaming community clear and easy.  If you’re running Windows Vista and you’re struggling to get WP to work, there’s a neat piece here.

Darren put together a nice new theme for writers, but more importantly it’s worth checking out his site simply to see what every WordPress website should look like. Back to work now, I’m using WordPress to build a new website for the Great Chefs television program, so be sure to check it out in a few days!

Make money online with Google AdSense

A few days back I wrote a piece called What are the most expensive search terms? and talked a bit about the Google Keyword Tools which allows you to see how much keywords are worth. It’s designed to allow marketing professionals gauge the value of an ad campaign by allowing them to see which words are valuable and the volume of traffic which searches for a given keyword or key phrase but it can also be used by online publishers to make money online by understanding how to traffic shape our blogs for better keyword performance.

How does it work?

The tool allows you to select a number of factors when reviewing the value of a website or keyword pattern, first you may select the specific countries or language of traffic, this allows you to focus on a particular market when posting ads to potential blogs but that’s not what we want … after all as a blog owner I don’t mind if I make money from people surfing in Australia or Austria right? So the first thing you’ll want to do when setting your sights on new keywords is change the default settings from United States to All Countries and Territories. This will allow you to see the whole world’s value.

Next, as you can see from the graphic above you’ll want to review your existing website content for keywords. Specific descriptive words and phrases are great for people who want to sell something but as a blog publisher, you to understand what Google currently thinks your website is about so that you can assess how to steer your blog in the future.

For example, when I search for keywords on thisismyurl.com, I receive a list of keywords that Google believes I am blogging about. They are: make money on the (7), how to make money (6), way to make money (6), make money online (6), work at home (7), work from home (5), make money (30), to make (5), how to (8), at home (7), money making (18), from home (6), data entry (9), earn money (7), money (19), online (8), blog (10), business (6), website (7), Miscellaneous keywords (23)

Ironically, if you’d asked me what my website was about I’d have told you that it was about organic marketing, wordpress or even SEO before I’d have told you it was about making money online, so it just goes to show how cool this tool really is.

Making money with the data

show esimated cost per clicks Make money online with Google AdSense imageThe next part of the puzzle is to look at the Estimated Cost Per Click (CPC) for keywords on the site but there’s a trick here, by default it’s not shown! Once you have the Estimated CPC column showing, you’re almost done. The next key to truly understanding the value of your keywords is to switch the Match Type to Exact (you can just see it in the graphic here). That will make sure the data you’re looking at is for exactly what you think you’re looking at.

The resulting list will provide you with a breakdown of both the estimated value per click and the number of times that keyword appears in Google’s search results for a given time period. For example, the phrase how to make money on the internet is worth $4.01 and is searched for 9,900 times globally in a given month. Sounds pretty good right? Well it is, except coming soon (which I just put up a free template for) is worth $1.30 and is searched for 201,000 times. Which is worth more? Luckily I’m pretty good with basic business math so here’s a comparison:

  1. $4.01 x 9,900 = $39,699
  2. $1.30 x 201,000 = 261,300

So using basic high school math, it’s easy to determine that a website would be much better off focusing it’s content on lower value keywords with a higher search percentage unless the total accumulated value of a keyword family outweigh the value of an isolated phrase. Let me explain. while an isolated keyword comparison would imply that coming soon is a superior subject to blog about (and earn money from) the phrase appears only once in the hundred phrases Google analyzed vs. dozens of variations of the phrase how to make money on the internet which while independently do not add up to much, combined far exceed an isolated phrase.

Looking at how to make money in Numbers

To compare the real value of key phrases and the true potential for making money on the Internet it’s important to look at numbers outside the Keyword Tools, for that I export the data into Apple Numbers, a spread sheet tool which allows me to group key phrases and do rapid data modeling to determine the most profitable avenue for an online site. In the case of my own blog, the top ten keyword patterns shape up to look like this:

keyword value graph Make money online with Google AdSense image

While the above graph doesn’t group keywords and phrases into select groups it does provide an immediate and staggering visual tool to truly comprehend the value of some keywords over others. While combining keyword phrases would lower the impact, the keyword AdSense is clearly the most substantial value at nearly $10 million per month in AdWord placements.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this rather basic breakdown of my own website and I hope it gives you some insight into how to make money online with Google AdSense yourself. As always, I’m rather shameless in my self promotion and would love to remind you that I’m available for onsite consultation anywhere in the world assuming the temperature there is between 82° and 96°.

Where to go to school to be a web designer

Thinking different

One of the most common questions I receive from young people (or adults looking for a new career) is where to go to school to become a web designer. It’s a tough questions because as I pointed out a few days ago in another post, the jobs people do on the web are pretty poorly defined but if you’re dedicated to doing something on the web, my honest advice is not to go to school for the web. I’ve seen a ton of ads for schools offering to train you in this or that, give you a diploma (or even a degree) in web marketing etc. but since I’ve worked for both colleges and universities … I can tell you that the programs are for the most part simply designed to fill seats, not offer quality education. So then what to do? Well, it really depends on what you’d like to do both now and in the future.

Web Design & Rich Media Design

If tweaking pixels is your thing and you wake up every morning trying to produce great artwork like my friend Katie, then you’ll want to be a web designer. These people turn art into commercial marketing solutions, so the best place for them to go to school is a little service called their local design studio. If you’re good enough to kick Photoshop’s ass, spend ten hours a day proving yourself and by the time you have five years in the business you’ll be among the best.

I use my friend Katie as an example because when I was teaching at a local college she out performed expectations, her work was stunning but when asked why it was so good, her answer was always so humble … she sat in her room and drew most of her life. So, if you want to be a web designer … skip school, sit in the local park and learn to draw. Once you’ve accumulated a portfolio that out performs everybody else, you win.

Web Publishing

Web Publishers (as I wrote) are about paying attention to detail and formating content effectively. There’s no school that can train you for that but if you are going to go to school, I’d recommend taking an English program or something along the lines of Communication or Journalism. Being a good writer will add a strong ace in your pocket and being able to edit the work of others will only add to your marketability.

Web Marketing, Management & Masters

Running a website is effectively running a business, so take a Business or Marketing program to become a better web manager. These days a great Web Master is somebody who can analysis ROI (Return on Investment) as well as code or design, so having a background in business management will make all the difference for you.

Web Programmers & Developers

The vast majority of the web is programmed in one of two languages, either PHP or ASP/ASP.net. Both of these are called scripting languages because they’re not real programming languages which means that they’ve been developed to accomplish simple tasks such as web applications but would not effectively translate to more complex programming languages such as Java or C++.  This causes a dilemma for people who want to become web programmers, since few schools teach scripting languages instead offering object orientate programming and theory.

While there’s nothing wrong with earning a Computer Science degree to become a web programmer, they are different disciplines and it would be like teaching a crane operator to pilot a boat, similar but different. My advice for people who want to become a web programmer is simple … just do it (is that trademarked?). Pick a simple project such as a form to email gateway and write it, then try something a little harder and eventually you’ll be a web programmer.

The Cost of Training

One of the reasons that I’m such a big advocate for people training themselves is the cost of education. Training to be a web designer at most schools will cost you $30,000 or more! For that amount of money, I’d recommend sening Seyd a few bucks for putting together his post 15 Sites Which Will Make You a Mind Blowing Designer which links to the best tutorial sites on the web.

Book Review: Content Rich by Jon Wuebben

contentrich 126x300 Book Review: Content Rich by Jon Wuebben imageRecently I won a copy of Content Rich by Jon Wuebben from Andy Beal’s website the Marketing Pilgrim. First off, let me say a huge thank you to Andy for running the contest and that I received the book yesterday. In fact, I didn’t put it down and finished reading it this morning. Now my dog eared, sticky noted copy of this great book is going to sit on my book shelf for a few days while I absorb the contents and then I’ll reread it paying extra attention to my own comments I wrote the first time through.

In his book, Jon covers a lot of ground with an emphasis on ensuring content is unique, interesting and above all focuses on the reader. Think of it as user-centric writing for the new age. He also talks about how to use blogs to sell your product and reminds us that recommendations are a powerful sales generator:

“Blogs are really great for another big reason: consumers end up buying from your compnay not because of you so much, but because of what other consumers are saying about your product or service, in the blog. ”

There are a couple other strong reviews for the book at the KISS Business and Business and Blogging that I recommend taking a look at.

How to Run a Successful Web Site For Your Church

Church was the original social marketing complete with blogs, events and groups but a lot of small communities are finding it hard to make the transition from sticky notes on a bulletin board to the modern world of web based community building.

I’ve written this article with smaller churches in mind, as well as community groups and centers who find it difficult to hire the web expertise required to run a successful online community. This tutorial is aimed squarely at small churches across the country who want to offer their members an online presence but want to ensure it’s done cost effectively. A few days back I posted an article called Can you put up a website for less than $100? that got a lot of attention, this piece is more about how to help small community churches and non profits.

How to get started

To get started, there are a couple of things that you’re going to need. First, you’ll need a website address and secondly you’ll need a place to host it. Hosting is a little like renting space for your church and a website address is just like the civil address your mail comes to, it’s there to help people find you.

Your website address can also be called a domain name and to get started, you’ll need to decide if you want to run your website with absolutely no costs or if you can afford $7 per year for your address. If you’d like to register your own website address, you can do so at BlueHost.com for $6.95 per year, with or without hosting. The other option is to use a free service such as http://wordpress.com/ where you can build and host your church website for free. Remember, if you choose to host your site for free at http://wordpress.com/, your website address will be something similar to http://yourchurchname.wordpress.com/ which is perfectly suitable for most small churches.

If you’ve elected to host your website with BlueHost.com or a similar hosting provider, you’ll need to install WordPress through their hosting support tool called Fantastico or by FTP’ing it to your web server. Once you’ve installed the tool, it’s time to make the site feel like your church.

WordPress and Themes

There are a number of attractive theme’s available for WordPress, each may be customized by a web developer to include your own church photos and name. Some that I have found while looking are:

What’s important to remember when it comes to WordPress is that you can make it look (and act) anyway you’d like. Simply make sure you pick a Theme that is right for you and somebody can always customize it later on. Also, keep in mind that a good design for a church is about people not the building. Your community wants to feel part of the site, just like they want to feel like part of the church.

Adding Content

When building content for your website keep in mind that every church should have some basic pages:

  • A calendar with upcoming events and links to important church functions
  • Office and sermon schedules, possibly even an outline of what you’ll be discussing
  • An online contact form or email that is checked regularly
  • Directions to the church, maybe even a link to Google Maps
  • A way for people to get involved, feedback forms are a great idea
  • Online donations, there are several cost effective ways to accept online payments
  • Downloads and links to electronic versions of church materials. Did you know you can download the complete Bible to an iPhone?
  • Subscription features such as an email newsletter or RSS feeds
  • Free content, updated regularly

If you’re hoping to squeeze a few extra pennies out of the budget, you can host for free with the right partner. While not contact me? If you’re a church or community group, I’d be able to help you find free hosting in return for a link back to my site.

How would you improve a church website? What features would you like to see?
