Montreal WordPress Designer, Chris Bavota

As I often do, I was looking at my friend Chris Bavota’s website this morning for inspiration to write a post about WordPress and it occured to me, why not share with all of you some of the things that I love about Chris’s WordPress website and do a little “review” of it so that others who might wish to create a blog can see some of the great things Chris has done with BavotaSan.

First off, Chris is an independent website developer and creative type in Montreal Canada, his website is all about how to build and design WordPress websites for small business owners and online marketing types, basically the same audience as mine but with a much more technical and WordPress focus.

His website, BavotaSan.com is packed full of amazing goodies such as his free themes for WordPress and a series of premium themes such as the Stationery Premium WordPress Theme , Illustrious Premium WordPress Theme and a great paid WordPress plugin called Delete Duplicate Posts Pro which surprisingly … does just that. It’s great for auto blogging website in that it scans for duplicate posts and ensures you’re not falling victim to Google’s duplicate post penalties but Chris’s website isn’t just a great resource, it’s a work of interface art. Let’s take a look at some of the features of this great website.

The Footer

I always start with the footer when I review a website, it’s often the last place a design thinks to look but the first place somebody looks when they’re lost … so it’s important. Actually, it’s a little like Walmart I think in that most people never think about customer service until they’re standing in line and really upset. Walmart is one of the few national chains that I can think of who put great thought into this fact, when a customer is trying to return or complain about something … make it easy for them, make it pleasant.

The footer on Chris’ website does just that. Finding things easily is a pleasant experience.

You can easily see the links he wants to promote in his footer, as well as a clearly defined link for Twitter.  His downloads and tutorials are organized to be effective and you’ll see this subtle use of a “Back to Top” option with an icon, a small detail often over looked by web designers in a rush. Ironically, Chris isn’t a web designer, he’s a web developer so his attention to detail is refreshing.

The Header

At the top of Chris’ website he promotes his internal links very well using a process we call deep linking but it’s done subtly and doesn’t interfere with users ability to navigate his website. In fact his menu is designed to accomplish two functions. First, he accommodates the users need to quickly reach content and two gives search engines the ability to easily feature content from his site.

Two things that I absolutely love about Chris’ website? First, his use of the Get image from post code (he uses the code as a part of his theme rather than as a plugin, which is very effective) and the great link to his RSS feed on the right.

Everybody should take a few minutes to visit Montreal Web Designer, Chris Bavota .

Free WordPress Theme – One Night in Paris

onenightinparis free wordpress theme 155x300 Free WordPress Theme One Night in Paris imageThis is a complete edit of my earlier One Night in Paris theme for WordPress, I build the original theme over a year ago and have spent a lot of hours improving my skills since then, so here’s my latest free WordPress theme release for everybody to download and enjoy.

The theme features a rich, three column layout for the homepage and a large single column for content within the website. I’ve purposely left formating to a minimum on this theme to allow web designers to rapidly introduce their own creative elements to the theme and make changes.

You can preview the theme live here on thisismyurl.com or download and enjoy the theme free of charge on your own website.

Get a Free Web Site

So I was over on Dat Money and saw a great idea, he’s giving away free banners for your website in return for a link in the footer of your website. Now that’s a great deal and one that I hope a lot of you consider taking him up on. This is a great way for community centers or churches to get a free banner for their website and looking over his work it’s actually pretty good.

Getting stuff for free is one of the coolest things about the Internet, and his idea of giving away a free website header is one of the best ideas I’ve seen for building your organic marketing potential, it really is a great idea and one that I’m kicking myself for not thinking of, but I think that I can one up him.

I’ll give you a free website.

Got your attention? Great. So here’s the deal, you’ll get:

  • A free domain name to help brand your business
  • $25 free Yahoo credits to promote your new website
  • $50 in free Google credits to buy AdWords on the worlds most popular ad network
  • A free installation of WordPress, the best content management tool around
  • Your choice of thousands of free themes which I’ll install for you
  • Free Search Engine Optimization for your new website
  • Free integration of Google Analytics
  • Free integration of Google Web Master Tools
  • A free XML sitemap for your website
  • Free website caching controls
  • Free SPAM protection for your blog
  • Free integration in WordPress statistics
  • Five free eBooks about online marketing
  • UNLIMITED Hosting Space, you can store as much as you want!
  • UNLIMITED File Transfer so you don’t have to worry about having too much traffic
  • UNLIMITED Domains, you can run as many websites as you want
  • 2,500 POP/Imap Email Accounts for you and your business
  • SSH (Secure Shell), SSL, FTP, Stats, CGI, Ruby (RoR), Perl, PHP, MySQL

So you’ve got to be asking yourself what I want in return right? What’s the catch? How am I going to take advantage of you? Well of course there’s a catch so here it is, these are the things that I want in return:

  1. I want you to sign up for a hosting account with BlueHost using my affiliate link
  2. I want you to agree to let me place a small credit link from your new website to mine

Now some of you will point to #1 and say wait .. that’s not free but look closer, once you signup with BlueHost they’ll give you a free domain name as well as $25 at Yahoo and $50 at Google, so signing up with BlueHost costs you nothing.

So what happens next? After you sign up with BlueHost, you’ll pick a theme from the WordPress Theme Directory, select one of my free themes or provide your own functional theme for WordPress. Once that’s done, I’ll setup your website for you and ensure it’s functional on your new domain name.

I don’t think you’ll find a better deal than this, and I’m only going to do it for the first 25 people to signup with BlueHost using this deal.

How to get a unique WordPress theme

One of the more frustrating things about using WordPress to a first time website owner is trying to find a unique, high quality WordPress website theme that doesn’t look like every other WordPress website on the market. It’s a pretty big task, even with thousands of great themes available. Let’s take a look where and how to start.

Theme Directories

Official Theme Directory - WordPress has a massive collection of free themes to download in their themes directory, the only problem with them is that most of the good themes have been used so often that it’s hard to find a unique one however, with a few tweaks and changes to color you can make even the most popular themes your own. Sometimes just changing the header and background graphics is enough to separate your website from hundreds of others using the same theme.

Other Theme Directories – A couple years ago there was bit of confusion over where to list your WordPress themes, that led to a handful of quality directories of WordPress themes which include but free and sponsored themes. A simple Google search will return a good list for you.

Premium Themes

The exact definition of what makes up a premium theme is a little questionable but in general a premium theme is a regular WordPress theme which costs money. The quality of premium themes vary, as do the features included but since the theme has an initial investment (generally $25 – $200) the number of people who have downloaded and installed the theme is considerably fewer. This makes it possible for your website to have a design which is not as widely circulated as the free themes.

Creating a Theme

Building a WordPress theme from scratch is your best bet to achieving a truly unique theme and if you have some knowledge of web technologies everything you need to know is stored online at the WordPress Codex. Specifically, there’s a great article called Theme Development « WordPress Codex that will answer every question you could possibly have about the workings of WordPress. In general to build a strong theme you should have the following skill set:

  • HTML or xHTML
  • PHP scripting experience
  • CSS layout knowledge
  • Image editing knowledge such as Adobe Photoshop or Fireworks if you want your website to have graphics
  • JavaScript programming knowledge for interactive elements

Hiring a WordPress Theme Developer

While the best solution for acheiving a unique theme is to build one from stratch, not everybody had the skills needed to create a quality theme and so hiring an experience WordPress developer becomes the best option. There are a few places to find people with the skills, including the WordPress Job board and mailing list. Of course, you’re always welcome to contact me for a free quote as well.

Can you put up a website for less than $100?

As a web professional, I love nothing more than opening my email first thing in the morning and having somebody ask me if I can build them a website for $100. Oddly, this happens a lot so I’ve decided to write a blog entry here on my site to help you do it yourself.

First, you’ll need to register a domain name.

A domain name is your address on the web, you’ll want to make it snazzy but simple. I recommend using a reputable hosting company to register your domain name. BlueHost will charge you $6.95 for a year.

Secondly, you’ll need a hosting account.

Again, I will recommend BlueHost since it’s where I host my website and I’ve had no problems in two years. Their basic hosting package is $6.95 per month which means your new website now costs $90.35.

Next you’ll need a website.

BlueHost comes complete with a service called Fantastico, once you’ve activated your account click the Fantastico link in your profile to install cool scripts on your new hosting account.

Look for WordPress, it’s the best choice to manage your website and is included for free as part of your BlueHost hosting account. Install WordPress in your base directory, when it’s done you’ll get a username and password as well as a link to your website manager.

Making your website look great.

Now that you’ve purchased a domain name, setup your hosting and installed WordPress as a website manager you’ll want to install a theme. Theme’s are what make WordPress websites look different from each other, there are literally thousands of free themes on the web. In fact, if you’d like to use one of mine, you’re welcome to use Minimalist Fixed, a free WordPress theme.

Update: October 18th – I’ve added two more themes in the last couple of days.

Adding Content

You can quickly add new content to your website by adding Pages in WordPress, this will automatically publish your new content to the website you setup earlier.

There you go, a fully functional website complete with a content manager for less than $100.
