Packaging for Success

Comments Off

Have you ever judged a book by its cover? Actually I guess a better way to ask that question is, have you ever not judged a book by its cover? Of course not, how things look are important to us and as consumers we’re always looking for more than the product inside the container, we’re also looking for the packaging … it’s a little like wrapping paper at Christmas, we want to feel spoiled when we buy it.

Packaging isn’t limited to a grocery store (although it is a perfect example of packaging), we also judge the quality of a product based on its packaging at trade shows and industrial equipment, taking the time to put a little bit of trim work and paint on an old house almost always increases its value in the marketplace so why then, do so many people forget to properly package their own products?

Tropicana’s branding gamble
Packaging is such a funny thing that  we often don’t even notice how powerful it is but take the below example of what happened when Tropicana Orange Juice changed the packaging for its iconic orange juice from the traditional design on the left (with a great big orange) to a more upscale, generic style on the right.

The result (beyond a ton of media attention) was a consumer rebellion at the cash register, designers seem to like the new design but consumers hated it. The result? The company switched back to their original design. More importantly it helps designers and marketing people remember that packaging, whether it be retail or commercial is critical to the success of a product.

Ashley would like to give you a free MacBook Air.

A lot of the time, people think this type of post is a joke or a scam but it’s not. Ashley Morgan of Upstart Blogger is giving away a free MacBook Air. There’s no real trick to the promo, simply link to his contest (here) and you can win it.

Why would he give away a MacBook Air?

Actually he could have picked anything to give away but the MacBook Air is sexy, it’s sleek and it’s amazingly cool. It’s also a valuable giveaway which will attract far more interest than say a free pencil but I guess the real question is why … why would a successful blogger like Ashley give away something as valuable as a MacBook? Wouldn’t it cost him a lot?

Yes. Simply put, giving away a MacBook Air will cost him a lot but cost it seems is a funny thing. As long as he gets back more than he give out, is there really a cost? Need that explained a bit more?

The cost to Ashley is fixed, he’s giving away a MacBook Air which according to Apple has a cost of $1499.

Ashley is trading links from websites such as mine to his posting at http://www.upstartblogger.com/link-to-me-and-grab-a-free-macbook-air. Every time I link from my blog to Ashley’s blog it acts as a vote from my website (PageRank 5) to Ashley’s. This does two things:

  1. First it reaffirms with Google that UpstartBlogger is a valuable contributor to the Internet which in turn increases his websites position in search engine result pages (SERP’s). This improves his position and ensures his blog appears higher in the results.
  2. Secondly, it causes readers just like you to follow my links to his website and in turn be exposed to his advertising which in turn … increases his revenue.

In short, the offer is a calculated risk which all business people can learn from.

If AR+AS is greater than C, it’s not actually costing him anything. So, as long as AR (Advertising Revenue) plus AS (Advertising Savings) is greater than C (Cost) he’s going to make a profit through the placement of ads and the money he saves by not having to buy links to his website.

Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up

I received an email this week from a friend of mine who’s been looking for a medical alert device for his grandmother which cracked me up. Not because old people falling is funny (it really isn’t) but it reminded me of a commercial when I was a kid for this old lady who’d fallen and couldn’t get up. Again, the commercial itself wasn’t terribly funny but the branding the phrase “help I’ve fallen and can’t get up” was brilliant.

See that’s the funny thing about marketing. It doesn’t matter that old ladies getting hurt is traumatic, without intending to do it the marketing professionals behind the medical alert device created a national pop culture movement that spread from late night TV to Saturday Night Live and had references on most popular culture shows of the time, that’s the aim of any budget marketer … the move the cost of advertising away from their own client and into the main stream media where brand recognition (even as the butt of a joke) is free.

In recent years, we’ve seen the same thing accomplished with Wendy’s “where’s the beef” and of course the infamous “wazzzzzzzzz up” campaign where simple, clever lines delivered effectively made the shift from marketing to pop culture without much effort.

I don’t give a tweet.

i dont give a tweet I dont give a tweet. image

Twitter suffered a denial of service attack this morning, millions of users (including me) got cut off from the service and you want to know something? I didn’t give a tweet. In fact, it simply acted as a reminder to me how useless I believe Twitter really is and inspired me to truly contemplate my place not only in the Twittershere but also on the Internet as a whole.

Twitter is useless

I keep trying to come up with reasons to use twitter but for all the simplistic reasons I can come up with, I can’t actually find one ‘killer app’ excuse for me to use the popular micro-blogging service. I know there is one, I just can’t seem to find it.

Friends of mine use the term “low signal to noise” ratio when talking about twitter but what they’re really saying is that for every reasonable, quality message you receive you get thousands of pieces of rubbish which to me, means that most of the time, it’s nothing more than a distraction.

I solved this a while back by writing my own Twitter interface, basically it’s a web page that fetches my Twitter feed and converts it to an RSS feed which I then read with a news reader … minus 1,790 of the roughly 1,800 people I follow.

That’s right … I don’t really follow you, your tweets go straight to my trash but don’t take it personally, it’s me not you. Frankly I felt it was rude to not follow you (after all, you follow me right?) but then after I started following you, I realised that the vast majority of what you tweeted about was:

  1. promoting your latest _____ (book, website, get rich quick, porn project)
  2. promoting yourself
  3. talking about your lunch
  4. or simply, really … really dull.

Funny thing is, there are lots of openly commercial people and companies that I follow but they usually make it worth my while, offer timely information or do something worth tuning in to which I believe has led me to a few basic rules when it comes to Twitter.

1. Direct messages don’t work (too much spam, too little time)

2. If it’s worth telling me, you’ll email me (too much spam, too little time)

3. I don’t care that you just beat your high score on an Atari 2600

4. I don’t have time for Twitter

That last one is the most important one, unlike email and Facebook I simply don’t have time for Twitter … the grass is too green, the lake too blue and the wind has the smell of something too summery to be bothered Tweeting about things …

Coming Soon! WordPress Theme

comingsoon Coming Soon! WordPress Theme imageThis theme may go down in history as my lamest theme ever but it’s a utilitarian theme designed with a simple purpose, to display a Coming Soon! message on the homepage as a notice to new comers while the website is under construction.

To install the theme, simply download the ZIP file and uncompress it before uploading the resulting /coming-soon/ directory to your web server.

Why build it?

Actually it’s a funny thing, I’ve written before that sometimes when you write a blog you need to review your Analytics (The Vomitorium and Data Mining) and looking over my numbers today, I’ve seen a steep climb in the number of people searching for a template like this.

The Coming Soon! theme offers users the ability to quickly add a page while still allowing you to track the vital statistics and add plugins such as Google Analytics or keyword tools. The theme makes full use of the header and footer functions, without displaying any actual website content.

Customizing the Theme

This theme is a bare bones WordPress theme. In fact it doesn’t even make use of the Loop so if you’d like to customize it by adding a graphic or changing the text, simply open the index.php file and add basic HTML within the <div> tags.

How do you install WordPress Plugins?

So the other day I was talking to a friend online, he’s pretty tech savvy but he’s never run a website so I set him up with WordPress. As soon as the site’s live, I’ll be sure to post a link to it but the funny thing was that after a few days of him doing tweaks to the content I showed him the plug-in directory and he was shocked. He’d always used Joomla before, so the idea of true ‘drag and drop’ plug-ins blew him away.

This got me thinking however, maybe there’s a lot of people out there who want to run their own website, maybe they even want to do it for only a $100 (or less) but are terrified of the technology so I’ve decided over the next few weeks to post some fairly entry level tutorials for WordPress, my more regular readers might roll their eyes but bear with us while we delve into some of the less technical aspects of WordPress and help new users learn the system.

Today, I’d like to look at installing a plug-in. I think this is one of the most terrifying endeavors for a new WordPress blog owner but honestly, it’s one of the easiest especially with the new WordPress 2.7 installer.

  • First, log into your administration area and click the Plugins link on the left hand side.
  • Next, follow the link  Plugin Browser/Installer at the bottom of your page.
  • Honestly, you’re almost done.
  • Find a plugin that you like. I recommend searching for the WordPress.com Stats plugin, it’s amazingly cool, easy to use and free.
  • Once you search, you can read about the plugin and click the Install button to the right.
  • Yep, that’s all there is to it.

With the new version 2.7 of WordPress, things are getting so easy that just about anybody can setup and operate a WordPress website without needed a web developer at all. :(
