Thoughts blog site

I recently came across a new blog site called thoughts.com and found it very interesting.

The website is a fairly easy to use social networking/conversation websites designed to be extremely widget friendly. This gives each individual user the ability to interact with teh website in a completely different way, I really like that feature and to me it makes the website far more about me, which of course is always my personal objective.

The website allows you to interact with a community of bloggers through the widgets, you basically decide which information you’d like to share and your account is updated with  the latest blog posts from your friends as well as emails and a ton of other stuff.

There’s a daily news section with an extensive amount of information crawled from around the web as well as breaking news and the ability to discuss or participate in the news community, through an active discussion board.

thoughts.com is a fairly interactive community with some really though provoking and thoughtful personal web blogs, with the vast majority of content generated by an active community of users. People on thought.com seem (for the most part) to subscribe to the companies “one love policy” which helps encourage like minded people to interact in a positive way.

What Is Your Marketing Face?

As I have started to look into social networking again, I came to think about the importance of setting up a good profile. There are lots of good tips and pointers out there on how you should promote yourself and what you should never put in your network profile(s). You can see a good example here on WritersCorner:
Setting Up A Marketing Profile

So as I am setting up my profile, I think about what to put in the “tell us about yourself” field. And it hits me: I choose what to write. What I want people to know and what not to know about me. I surely will leave out some things about myself.

“Leaving out some specific things about myself in my profile”. Does that make me a liar?

The truth is that we are all multifaceted creatures.  None of us is never 100% of what other people perceive us to be.  We have many sides and many “faces”, strong and weak sides.  Most of what we put out there when marketing ourselves is pretty one sided – we show the face we believe will be most accepted, the most trust worthy. The side of us that shows us a business people. This isn’t really lying, just holding back some of the truth. We simple just show one consistent side of ourselves.

But what about the “rest of us”?  What about the other faces we carry? The ones that most of the public doesn’t know about, embraces or sees?  Should this side be kept hidden and undiscovered, or could it be brought into the conversation? If I should choose to show of another side of me, would I have to find a different voice, or brand? And surely I risk the connections to my fellow networkers and all the contacts I’ve build up with the face they know, trust and feel comfortable with.

I think we all trust people we feel are genuine and honest. But do we really know these persons? There must be a way for all of us to show our true selves, without risking what we have already built, and all the contacts we have made. So tell me the truth here:  Do you have a marketing face?

I don’t get Twitter.

This morning there was an article by Erick Schonfeld called Biz Stone Plays It Cool On Colbert and I have to admit, I feel a little foolish professing this on a technology blog but I don’t really ‘get’ Twitter.

I think my problem ‘getting’ Twitter is that to me it’s a bunch of noise distracting me from my daily objectives. I already have an Instant Message client running as well as Skype, Facebook, an iPhone, iChat and my office phones. Not including my email, RSS subscriptions and usernet group updates … I guess in truth I just don’t understand the need for another source of chatter.

Please don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there’s got to be a purpose to it … I just don’t get it.  I don’t think I’m alone either.

Biz Stone (Twitter) was on The Colbert Report last night and even he seemed unable to truly explain what the purpose of the popular social networking tool is. Jeremy Lichtman Lichtman has a point where he states there’s a high ‘noise to signal’ ratio, so maybe my issue with Twitter is the same issue I had as a kid when my uncle tried to get me to listen to the old Ham radio … maybe Twitter users are the modern, Internet version of dorky middle aged men talking to each other in closets?

Five Days of Free Marketing Articles, Day Two

All this week, I plan to post a series of links to online marketing web articles that I’ve enjoyed with the hopes that you’ll also find something useful in them. Take the time to comment below and let me know what you think and remember to comment on their website too as it will help build both your online business and theirs!

Here are four sites I found on the weekend and added to my RSS feeds so that I could go back and see what’s new:

You know what I’m looking for but have the hardest time finding? Great articles on social networking and viral campaigns. There’s a lot out there with buzz words but I’d like to find some quality sites. If you know of any, please let me know.

Want to know how to make money online? Stop thinking so hard.

The other day I was wrapping up a new website for the Fredericton Meals on Wheels organization, it was a charity gig that I happily donated my time on (thanks again for the support everybody) which led me to work with a well known local community activist, John Carty. He’s the new director of the MOW program and a man who’s master the art of giving to the community, funny thing was that he said something hilarious one day when I was on the phone with him and it’s brilliant advice for web entrepreneurs.

Everybody loves pets.

What he actually said what that everybody loves animals, he used to be the head of the Fredericton SPCA so he’s a man who knows about animals. During another chapter of his life he ran for local office and he discovered that most people had a pet in the house when they came to the door. I hope John doesn’t mind me sharing this story, but the point is pretty simple … people love animals. So what’s this got to do with making money online?

i can has cheezburger if I tell you? Honest to Google, while the rest of us are killing ourselves building complex social networking engines, marketing tools, SEO optimization mechanisms and writing content on everything from how to make money blogging to Google in your TVthese guys are making a mint doing nothing more than putting funny captions on pictures.

Want to know how to make money online? Stop thinking so hard. imagehttp://icanhascheezburger.com/ may seem like a joke at first glance but this cheesy little website stacks up like this:

Basic Traffic Statistics
Alexa Traffic Ranking: 2,780
Google PageRank: 7
Average of 709,717 backlinks from major search engines.

You read that right … a PageRank of 7 and over 700,000 backlinks to a website with cute pictures of kittens and some funny text. Their website’s estimated worth (for the domain name, not the business) … $2,202,868.

I’m not knocking icanhascheezburger.com, honestly I’m just jealous that I didn’t think of it first. The website is a  WordPress.com hosted website powered by the greatest tool ever, it also means that there was basically no startup costs to put it together. Basically a domain name and a free account.

My point I suppose (if I indeed have one) is that much like my recent article So You Lost Your Job, Now it’s Time to Live., and How make money online? the only obstacle between you and making money online is your own desire to start doing it.

Well … I think there’s only one thing for me to do then …

On Expertise, Self Promotion and WordPress

Cory Miller wrote a piece the other day that I found really interesting, it was on becoming an authority and why he started using WordPress. It reminded me of a lecture I used to give in college about the power of the internet and how my first year students should become expert bloggers to help secure their own futures in the industry.

Most of my students wanted to work in the video game industry as 3D animators, artists and modelers but they lacked professional experience and portfolios. This was in my opinion a perfect example of how to use WordPress to get a job and in the process, become an expert.

Here’s the basic plan and the strategy that I shared with students term after term …

First, register a domain name and setup hosting. Ideally, you’ll want to do this on your own domain name but if you’re really stretched and can’t afford to setup a $100 website, you can do it for free on WordPress.

Step two, find a template theme for your website. It’s easy, there are plenty of free WordPress themes here on my website or you can find thousands on the web.

Now, setup your site and add your theme … now the tough part … start writing and posting every day. For students this shouldn’t really be a problem, pay attention in class and when you get home write about what you learnt that day and post the results to your blog. If you do this every day, eventually you’ll find that others are coming to your website to read about it and eventually, you’ll discover that they’re telling their friends about your cool, free lessons.

Step Four is where it gets really scary, spend some time on Google and find ten forums about your subject matter and 25 other blogs. Every day, visit two of the ten forums and try to get to at least five of the 25 blogs, every time there’s something you can contribute … do it. Answer questions, ask questions, comment on work, offer advice, support the authors and be constructive. If there’s an opportunity for you to link back to an article or tutorial that you’ve written, do it.

Keep doing this every day, using RSS feeds whenever possible to keep track of your favorite authors and eventually you’ll discover that you’re not just a student in the industry any more, you’re an active member of the community and maybe one day … if you’re lucky, you’ll be an expert in it.

Using WordPress with LinkedIn and developing custom themes.

If you’re not already using LinkedIn, you should take a look at the business networking tool. LinkedIn is a cross between Facebook and Monster, a social networking website designed to help build your professional career and maintain professional contacts. You can even using the WordPress for LinkedIn plugin to automatically your profile with the latest posts from WordPress.

There’s an interesting comparison of WordPress vs. MovableType with an interview featuring Matt Mullenweg, the article takes a good look at using MovableType for larger websites. Remember if you’re using WordPress for large volume websites you’ll definitely want to read my piece on speeding up WordPress.

There’s a lot of theme reviews done with an eye for design but I really enjoyed themes for developers which takes a look at some themes with more power and a developer focus. Speaking of themes, there’s a great 10 step guide for improving your own WordPress install, it goes over the process of how to improve your WordPress site in the most basic terms for new users. Lunarpages announced their WordPress theme winners today, there’s a lot of great looking work so check them out this morning but if you’d rather develop one for youself there’s a great tutorial for you at developing a Wordpress theme from scratch as well as an interesting review of Artisteer.

Usability is a huge part of my consulting business and WordPress just released a study of their own at Usability Testing Report that takes a look at why the admin for WordPress took on such a major revamp.
