Is it possible to schedule videos on YouTube?

Well, the simple answer is no but … as well most things on the web, there’s a great work around (thanks to Donace over at the Nexus for pointing it out to me via Twitter).

YouTubeStep One, upload your video but mark it private to ensure that it’s not live. This is always a good idea as it allows you to edit it online, change the title or keywords etc. before it’s live.

Step Two, mark it public on the proper day.

This isn’t nearly elegant as the built in timer in WordPress (How to schedule a post on WordPress) but it does have the advantage of allowing you to upload massive volumes of videos at the same time (I set mine to upload videos overnight) and I can release them on a schedule.

Scheduling a Reminder

Believe it or not, running a website or releasing videos is really hard work. Why? Mostly because it’s off in cyberspace and I forget to update the content! To get around this, one of the first tricks I used was to ask my wife to remind me but that got old very quickly so instead I started using iCal from Apple to remind me. If you’re on a PC you can use Outlook or if you’re looking for a free alternative, use the calendar built into Google’s Gmail!

The benefit of using something like Gmail is that the event may be shared with a group so if you’re not available somebody else on the team can do it for you.

Is Web 2.0 going broke?

There was an interesting article on Slate.com (which I can’t seem to find using their search engine) which got reprinted on the Global website entitled Everybody’s surfing. No one’s paying “User-generated content may have changed the Internet. But ‘Web 2.0′ sites such as YouTube are suffocating under the costs of storing it” which talks about the state of the Internet and how big companies such as Facebook and YouTube are essentially going broke offering access to content. Now I’m not entirely sure that I believe they’re going bust but here’s a few interesting tid bits:

  • Google will lose $470-million on YouTube this year alone
  • YouTube spent about $250-million to acquire licenses this year
  • Yahoo’s investment in Flickr is equally unprofitable
  • Facebook spends $1-million a month on electricity

This of course is not good news for Web 2.0 but it reaffirms the questions I’ve raised in posts like Could somebody explain Twitter to me, please?, simply put … if the purpose of a business is to generate a revenue, what is their Revenue Model?

Example of a Winter Themed Slide Show on YouTube

Here’s a simple slideshow I put together for a friend last week to remind him of the winter. He’s from Senegal but spent a couple years in Fredericton Canada so I wanted to remind him of the joys of a winter wonderland while he’s forced to run on the beached in 90* weather, poor guy.

The images are all from Flickr, and belong (in order) to:

The slideshow was created in Apple Keynote, part of the iWork suite of tools and simply fades from shot to shot with a text typer writer effect on the text. I’ve uploaded the working file for anybody who would like to see the process in action as there isn’t really much to the tutorial.

  1. Copy and paste image
  2. Copy and paste text
  3. Format text
  4. Apple effect
  5. Repeat for each slide
  6. Select all slides
  7. Apply transition

How to make awesome 3d icons in Adobe Fireworks

preview blogger 300x150 How to make awesome 3d icons in Adobe Fireworks imageSo last week I put up some great new icons for social bookmarking websites, then I went ahead and did it again. So you may have expected me to upload another set this morning but sadly, I’m most likely on an airplane at the moment or sitting in an airport waiting for our regional carrier to figure out if they remembered how to fly a plane or not.

Instead of uploading another awesome set of icons, I decided to try my hand at doing a video tutorial on YouTube instead. That’s right folks … now you can not only spend countless hours reading my rants, you can listen to me too!

During the tutorial I mentioned that you can download the files from my website, so here they are:
