What are the most expensive search terms?

You know what? Sometimes I’m amazed by things that I didn’t even know people don’t know and this week, my friend Josh over at noonanworks.com caught me off guard when he told me that he’d never considered the idea that some Google ads (from AdWords etc) are worth more money than others. In fact, since Google AdWords placements are acquired exclusively through bidding, some keywords and key phrases (combinations of keywords) are worth a fortune while others are almost worthless.

Take for example popular keywords such as Warcraft and WordPress, they’re practically worthless ($1.60 per click, of which the publisher receives roughly 50%) while other keywords such as mesothelioma are worth $45 or more per click. Ever wonder why so many people put up websites for consolidated loans? Those keywords are worth a fortune at $49. There are lists (mostly outdated) of the expensive keywords at Search Engine Watch and cached Google pages but if you really want to know what keywords are worth, why no go straight to the source and ask Google?

(btw, as a shameless piece of self promotion … once you’ve found the keywords that you’d like to build your business on … why not hire me to build your site?)

I was wondering about this issue too. Some clicks I get about 5 cents while some give me 2 dollars. The 2 bucks was like hitting a jackpot!

  3. hihi..love the self-promotion part:) I did know that some keywords are worth alot. In fact I tried out earning from this exact thing. My problem was that my sources of high-paying keywords were out-dated. But it can be done:)

  4. @Casper, thanks for the email earlier I blew out my server allotment running a recursive script (oops).

@Kai, I know! Some of my keywords here are worth a couple buck but most of the time they’re worth fairly small amounts. I know people who run websites specifically for the value but personally, I prefer to write about thing that I care about rather than high profit keywords.

@Christopher – I absolutely agree with you on that. If I really want to focus on making money, I would start writing about loans too! I love writing what I love writing only.

You’ve just got to target the right keywords if you want to make money with adsense. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as just picking the keywords with the highest CPC. A lot of factors go into detrmining how much Google pays you when someone clicks on an ad.

So I read your article and it for some odd reason it was a like a deer looking into headlights of car and just standing there. I have always known how google adwords and adsense works but never thought about gearing my focus towards key words that pay higher revenue. I agree I love to write about things I know, enjoy, and am passionate about so some key words just aren’t for me. However, there are plenty of interests in keywords that do have my interest that pay well. Excellent article and by the way I have been reading your blog for a few weeks now and have always enjoyed your content.

The keywords in your blog can really make a difference. I have days when I get xx clicks and $10.00 in revenue … then the very next day get the exact same amount of traffic, the exact same amount of clicks and $40 or more in revenue. Drives me crazy because I can’t be writing about the exact same thing every day … or can I? hmmmmmmm

I’d like to know how the whole thing works. When I use the google adwords tool it says the cost for my chosen keyword is, for example, $1.00 but when my ad gets clicked its often much less than that – something like 30 cents

These numbers have never worked for me. There are a lot of factors that have influence on the click price when these numbers are ideal.
