How to get a PageRank of 5

For those of you who know nothing at all about PageRanks and Alexa rankings, let me explain that they’re the modern equivenant of a Nielsen ratings for websites.

Alexa measures your website performance by volunteer users, in effect millions of average people agree to allow Alexa to collect statistics about their surfing habits and from that data, Alexa tracks and monitors activity on the Internet. At Halloween this year, Alexa ranked my website at 2,291,883. Today it’s at 231,354 which is a 1790% improvement for spending about 20 minutes a day on my website.

Google on the other hand ranks your website by looking at who your website connects to and in return, who connects to your website. That’s a pretty over simplified way to look at it but it’s also the general gist of the method. It’s a bit like a popularity contest, Google believes that if websites with high page ranks (the system is from 0 to 10) link to you consistently, your content must be of a certain value.

So now that you understand what a PageRank and Alexa ranking mean, here’s how I earned my respectable rankings in both … (drum roll anybody?) … quality content, consistently posted.

I know that you’re all hoping for a much better answer than that but sadly it’s the truth. My very good friend Chris Bavota jumped from a PR0 to a PR4 in just three months, doing exactly the same thing … he posts great articles that people love to read and he makes sure that he does it regularly.

Chris and I followed some easy to understand advice:

Once that was done, both Chris and I did what any self respecting blog owner would do:

  • we used deep linking techniques to ensure our readers know about related content on our website
  • we posted links to other peoples blogs, helping our readers find similar content
  • we let other blog owners know that we had articles of interest for their readers

There are no scams, no black hat SEO techniques, no short cuts and no tricks. Quality rankings on a quality search engine takes nothing more than a little bit of effort, quality content and the determination to contribute something positive to the Internet as a whole.

It’s amazing how you manage to push Alexa from 2 millions to 200K in two months. That’s not an easy feat. Congrats on getting a PR5. It’s well deserved, Chris.

  4. I was a little stunned by the Alexa results myself but a lot of the credit actually goes to Yan who’s written some great articles on link building. I’m not an SEO expert myself but I find like everything short of brain surgery, as long as you surround yourself with people who know, and share knowledge … almost anything is possible.

  9. One step at the time – that’s the greatest phrase of all times! If you want to achieve something big, start by working out the small ones. Commenting, deep linking, back linking… that’s all it takes, man!

    STUMBLED!

I have done these things, have a great readershi, usually 1000+ pageviews per post but still no PR.

    Hopefully soon.

I never expected this to happen but finally Sizlopedia has again managed to attain its previous popularity rank in the Google world. Google has restored Sizlopedia with a Google Pagerank 5 and this is more like a miracle.

  13. Hey Geoserv, I’m stumped too. I took a look at the details for your site and my best guess is that Google hates you. :( No, I’m kidding. I wish I could tell you but unless they’ve blacklisted you I have no idea.

It is always good to read an article like this to remind you that you have to get out there and do it every day. No short cuts, no press this button and own the world. The time most people spend trying to cheat the system and failing could have easily been used to do productive work.

  15. Nice work Christopher – not too shabby. You must have some pretty good backlinks.

Enjoyed this article Christopher. My wife and I are real estate agents and find it difficult to write compelling content. It seems most of what we would write about has been said already. Having said that, we are starting to write content that is personal in nature. We’re hoping that will draw readers in. Thanks for sharing your success. :)

  20. Hi Joe, I completely disagree with you … there’s a lot of content out there but not a lot that’s a threat for you. When I search for “washington home sales” I see an article for Obama right on the front page! That tells me immediately that nobody in your market is properly concentrating keywords into effective web content.

Take a few moments and write down 20 keyword combinations that you think people are using to find you, then add the word Washington (or your local market) to the phrase and you’ll quickly see, with a little bit of work you could increase visitors to your site but several hundred per month.

  21. Joe Lane says:

Thanks for the reply Christopher. We do rank for many of the keywords in our area (our cities, real estate, etc.), and do have the traffic. However, I long for the traffic that leaves comments on blogs! We have several blogs (search ‘colleen lane’), but the only blogs that are receiving consistent comments are those within a social network, like ActiveRain, for example. I’m beginning to think the commenting traffic will come from non-real estate related blog entries.

In the face of the tough competiton, Alexa is coming up with more and more user friendly and unique features. Ability to create own search enginem by giving access to the crawler is quite a novel feature in itself

This is a good article . It will definately boost your PR up.

  27. Hey guys, try to keep in mind that Google’s Pagerank system is about building authority for your blog, getting a good PR takes a lot of time and energy, hard work and determination. It’s nothing something that can come from a single link from here but a link from my website to yours is the first step in climbing a very big hill.

There have been a few comments posted that I must be naive to think this helps, or that my article has a low PR … on the other hand, my site has a PR of 5 and an Alexa score of ~200,000 so assume what you want, the offer is there and it’s free. :)

  28. Himanshu says:

If you want to make your site pr 5 then you should at least increase your inbound link with same pr which you want but there are still some sites and blogs out there who think that Google is joking around and they have not ceased paid link activities even after all those warnings by Google. Little do they know that the next action by Google would be far more worse and its time to realize and choose the stronger side.

I’m trailing in your path Christopher…but perhaps I may need to look into that code valdator thing you mentioned?
