What does Google think about you?
Google is the most powerful player in the online game but what does it see when it looks at you? There’s a really easy way to know for sure and it’s called the Google Keyword Tool. This simple tool will not only tell you what Google thinks your website is about but will also show you comparative keywords, how many people search for those keywords and how intense the competition is for your selected industry.

All you need to do is target your own website with the tool and Google will scan it for keywords and phrases which are designed to help you select the best keywords to promote your website. The secondary effect however is that Google’s data can be used by web masters to gain a deeper understanding of the content on their own websites and alter the content over time to increase popularity.
So what’s Google think about thisismyurl.com?
The true power of the Google Keyword Tool is that unlike Analytics which allows you to do some great data mining on your website, the Keyword Tool is designed for one purpose only, to help you make money. By using the data present from the tool I can see that while my website is highly focussed on making money online, I’m in a highly competitive market place (no surprise) with the exception of the key phrase “how to make a wordpress theme” but that phrase only accounted for 46 searches in January, hardly worth focussing on but a great idea for a future article.
Using the Google Keyword Tool, along with Analytics and Web Master Tools is a sure fire way to help you build a better understanding of not only how you see your website but how Google sees it.

What a great post, thanks! I have been wondering about this issue for a while and at one point I concluded any page that has my first name AND last name scattered around on ONE single page turns up as a result.
This is huge Christopher! I’ve known about this tool but have only used it for keyword research. I plugged our website into the field and discovered all sorts of keyphrases we do not have articles for.
You should have a Paypal “Donate” button. If and when you get one I’m buying ya a coffee (or beer, or milk, or whatever) for this one. :)

Great idea Christopher. Of course its not only good for seeing what Google thinks of YOUR site. You can also check out your competitors and see what they’re doing.
@Mike … great point, this isn’t just a tool to make your web site more Google savvy, it’s also a tool to find out what your competitors are doing wrong.
You can also use the related command at google Apparently your site is similar to Adobe’s?!?

@malcolm – LOL, that’s great to see :) Yes, I didn’t want to tell people but I secretly run a multinational graphics company in my spare time.
I also use this tool for keyword research when buying Adwords. But using it to determine what Google thinks my website about is so simple yet I did not think about it. Thanks for the heads up. I will use it for myself and to see what my competitors are up to.
Christopher, why have you kept your website away from me for a long time:-) I am really taken aback and I really appreciate you. The fact is that I use google tool for keyword research but it never occure to me that I could use it for a better analysis of my blog to really get on well. Thanks so much.
This keyword tool is great. Not to mention hilarious. I put my site into it and “barf dog food” came up. I have no idea how anyone got to my site from that.

What a grand notice about google. I’m honestly quite amazed that it has not been told before to such a great length.
