How do you install WordPress Plugins?
Welcome to my blog, please feel free to subscribe to my RSS feed, join me on Twitter or leave a comment.
So the other day I was talking to a friend online, he’s pretty tech savvy but he’s never run a website so I set him up with WordPress. As soon as the site’s live, I’ll be sure to post a link to it but the funny thing was that after a few days of him doing tweaks to the content I showed him the plug-in directory and he was shocked. He’d always used Joomla before, so the idea of true ‘drag and drop’ plug-ins blew him away.
This got me thinking however, maybe there’s a lot of people out there who want to run their own website, maybe they even want to do it for only a $100 (or less) but are terrified of the technology so I’ve decided over the next few weeks to post some fairly entry level tutorials for WordPress, my more regular readers might roll their eyes but bear with us while we delve into some of the less technical aspects of WordPress and help new users learn the system.
Today, I’d like to look at installing a plug-in. I think this is one of the most terrifying endeavors for a new WordPress blog owner but honestly, it’s one of the easiest especially with the new WordPress 2.7 installer.
- First, log into your administration area and click the Plugins link on the left hand side.
- Next, follow the link Plugin Browser/Installer at the bottom of your page.
- Honestly, you’re almost done.
- Find a plugin that you like. I recommend searching for the WordPress.com Stats plugin, it’s amazingly cool, easy to use and free.
- Once you search, you can read about the plugin and click the Install button to the right.
- Yep, that’s all there is to it.
With the new version 2.7 of WordPress, things are getting so easy that just about anybody can setup and operate a WordPress website without needed a web developer at all. :(

Wordpress has done a great job of streamlining their plugins. It’s literally almost as simple as just clicking an install button. This is a great way to promote the use of plugins, allowing blogs to have any and all features they want.
I dont know about you guys, but I actually still like to do it the old fashioned way. I use the same plugins on all my blogs, I just unzipped them put them in a file and upload all at the same time, no problems what so ever. I do the same for my themes
Installing Plugins…
WordPress definitely has made it easy to get plugins installed, I can remember having to download the desired plugin, ftp it the web server logging back into WordPress and having to activate the plugin manually.
These quick steps definitely make it eas…

As Mr. forex trading online (I hate it when people don’t put their names on the Name field…), I also install plugins the old-fashioned way. Can’t help it xD I feel like I’m more in control of things that way.
Weird, I know… but it’s true.

Thank you for letting it slide. I know it is annoying when people use keywords as their name, but it helps in site promotion. I figured I would meet in the middle. The name is david wolf. Please to meet a fellow blogger. By way chris. It not on this page, but I did through you on my blogroll for automatedforextradingonline.com/blog
Hey guys, you’re welcome to use either names or keywords and David you’re absolutely right, it helps with site promotion a lot.
I’ll tell you that as for me, I still prefer doing it the old fashion way but that’s mainly because most plugin developers are lazy and forget to include proper instructions in the interface, instead choosing to place the documentation in an external TXT file.
The irony to me is that the extra time to link the text file into the WP admin tool is only a few seconds and would result in a lot of increased users, I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve tossed out what looked like a perfectly good plugin because I couldn’t figure out how to install it properly.
At first this one click plugin install worked just fine but now I get the following error:
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare pclziputilpathreduction() (previously declared in /home/infopage/public_html/marketsecrets/blog/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/lib/pclzip.lib.php:5421) in /home/infopage/public_html/marketsecrets/blog/wp-admin/includes/class-pclzip.php on line 5498
Any chance you could tell me how to fix this :?:

Tehy there, I’m not too familiar with the plugin that uses the pclziputilpathreduction() but at first glance, I would guess that it must already be installed. The error Cannot redeclare pclziputilpathreduction() comes from having the function previously declared.
Take a look in your plugins folder to make sure you don’t have it already installed and if that’s the case I would take a look at uninstalling it fully then going again from scratch. Chris
As I understood this function need an ftp access to the server. Could it works somehow if you just have ssh access and do all the editing through it?

first to say, i am new about wordpress.com. I’m still confuse how to instal plugin on wordpress.com?
Christopher, my problem is that I am scared to install the 2.7 itself. Some of my friends tried to and have lost their sites completely and have had to revert to 2.6.5.
It may be a good idea to give a step by step installation tutorial to upgrade from 2.6.5 to 2.7 to start with.
